Is DevOps heavy coding?

DevOps professionals typically write some code to automate processes, manage infrastructure, and develop deployment pipelines, but the role also involves system administration, scripting, and tool configuration. The amount of coding varies depending on the organization and specific responsibilities, with some roles requiring more scripting and automation than traditional programming. Overall, DevOps emphasizes automation, collaboration, and continuous integration and delivery practices.

What does a DevOps engineer do?

DevOps is a set of practices that combines software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) to shorten the software development lifecycle and deliver high-quality applications continuously. DevOps engineers collaborate with developers and IT staff to automate, integrate, and monitor processes, focusing on continuous integration, continuous delivery, and infrastructure as code. Their responsibilities include managing deployment pipelines, automating infrastructure provisioning, ensuring system reliability, and facilitating communication between teams. By improving collaboration and automating workflows, DevOps engineers help organizations deliver software faster and more reliably.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps engineer?

To thrive as a DevOps Engineer, you need a solid background in software development and IT operations, typically supported by experience with automation, scripting, and cloud platforms. Familiarity with tools such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, and cloud services like AWS or Azure, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer), is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and communication skills set outstanding DevOps professionals apart. These competencies are crucial for streamlining development pipelines, ensuring reliable deployments, and fostering effective collaboration between development and operations teams.

What is DevOps?

DevOps refers to a combination of philosophies, tools, and practices that help to promote an organization's ability to deliver applications and services quickly while improving products at an increased speed over companies that use traditional software development. The increased speed assists organizations in better serving their clients and customers and therefore compete more effectively in the market. Essentially, this model puts development and operations teams together so that engineers can work through the lifecycle of an application and not feel saddled into a single function or skill set. This helps to ensure quality applications and increase development speeds.

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps professionals focus on automating software development and deployment processes, and AI tools are increasingly used to enhance these tasks. While AI can automate certain aspects, DevOps roles continue to evolve, requiring skills in scripting, cloud platforms, and CI/CD pipelines. AI complements DevOps practices rather than replacing the need for skilled practitioners.

What are some common challenges DevOps professionals face when integrating new tools into existing workflows?

DevOps professionals often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between new tools and legacy systems, resistance to change from team members, and ensuring proper security configurations. Successful integration requires thorough testing, clear documentation, and close collaboration with development and operations teams. Addressing these challenges can lead to smoother deployments and more efficient workflows, making adaptability and strong communication skills essential in this role.

What is the difference between Devops vs System Administrator?

AspectDevopsSystem Administrator
Required credentialsCertifications like AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, LinuxCertifications like CompTIA Linux+, Microsoft Certified

Summary:

The Manager, Azure Platform & DevOps Engineering role leads a combined team of engineers responsible for our Azure cloud infrastructure and CI/CD delivery pipelines. This is a people-leadership role: the Manager owns team performance, hiring, career development, and prioritization for approximately nine engineers, while setting technical direction, standards, and governance for both DevOps and Azure platform functions. The role is primarily managerial (roughly 90%), with limited hands-on involvement reserved for architecture review, technical escalations, and high-stakes decisions.

Education Requirements:

Bachelor's degree preferred, high school diploma (or equivalent) in combination with significant experience will be considered in lieu of degree. Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Responsibilities:

What This Role Will Lead:

  • The build-out and continued maturity of a combined DevOps and Azure Platform Engineering team.
  • Standardization of CI/CD and platform practices across technology stacks and application teams.
  • Talent development and succession planning within the team.
  • Cross-functional collaboration to accelerate delivery while strengthening platform reliability and security.

Team & People Leadership

  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of approximately nine engineers spanning DevOps Engineering and Azure Platform Engineering disciplines.
  • Own hiring, performance management, career growth planning, and workload distribution across the team.
  • Set team structure and role clarity, including how DevOps and Azure Platform responsibilities are divided and coordinated within the group.
  • Establish team goals, OKRs, and success metrics; report on team performance and delivery to senior leadership.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and cross-training between DevOps and platform engineering skill sets.

DevOps Strategy & Governance

  • Define and evolve DevOps standards, CI/CD best practices, governance frameworks, and deployment workflows across .NET, Java, and microservices applications.
  • Direct the team's use of Azure DevOps Pipelines (YAML and classic), Repos, Artifacts, and Boards to standardize and scale delivery.
  • Drive adoption of Infrastructure-as-Code and cloud-native delivery patterns across the organization.
  • Partner with Architecture, Development, QA, and Cloud Engineering leadership to streamline software delivery and reduce release friction.

  • Set direction for the team's management of core Azure services, including App Services, VMs, AKS, ACR, Storage, Networking, and Key Vault.
  • Guide decisions on cost optimization, scalability, reliability, and security posture across the Azure environment.
  • Oversee platform capacity planning, patch and update strategy, and lifecycle management for Azure infrastructure.
  • Ensure monitoring, logging, and alerting (App Insights, Log Analytics, Azure Monitor) provide the team with proactive visibility into platform health.

Security, Risk & Compliance

  • Ensure DevSecOps practices are embedded in pipelines, including secrets management, secure build processes, and image/container scanning.
  • Maintain alignment with regulatory requirements applicable to a financial services environment, including audit and recordkeeping obligations.
  • Oversee role-based access control, identity governance, and policy enforcement across DevOps tooling and Azure resources.
  • Ensure the team's practices support SOC/SEC/FINRA audit readiness and internal risk requirements.

Cross-Functional & Vendor Management

  • Represent the DevOps and Azure Platform functions in cross-departmental planning, budgeting, and roadmap discussions.
  • Manage relationships with relevant technology vendors and contractors supporting DevOps tooling or Azure infrastructure.
  • Partner with other engineering managers and directors to align platform strategy with broader technology and business goals.

Basic Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of scripting/automation languages (PowerShell, Bash, YAML) sufficient to guide and review team output.
  • Experience implementing or overseeing monitoring/observability frameworks.
  • Excellent communication, prioritization, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience managing teams that support both application delivery (DevOps) and infrastructure/platform engineering.
  • Familiarity with GitOps practices (Flux, Argo CD) or broader SRE methodology.
  • Certifications such as Microsoft Azure DevOps Engineer Expert, Azure Solutions Architect, or similar.
