What is the difference between Devops Velocity vs Devops Engineer?

AspectDevops VelocityDevops Engineer
Required CredentialsCertifications like AWS, Azure, Docker, KubernetesSimilar certifications, plus scripting and automation skills
Work EnvironmentCollaborative, Agile teams focusing on deployment speedOperational, development, and deployment tasks in IT teams
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, cloud service providersIT departments across various industries, including finance, healthcare
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on team efficiency and deployment metricsFocus on automation, infrastructure, and deployment processes

Devops Velocity emphasizes improving deployment speed and team efficiency, often measuring performance metrics. Devops Engineer involves hands-on technical work with automation, infrastructure, and deployment tools. While both roles require similar skills and certifications, Devops Velocity is more about team performance, whereas Devops Engineer focuses on technical implementation.

Is 40 too old to learn DevOps?

Age is not a barrier to learning DevOps or pursuing a DevOps Velocity role. Success depends on your willingness to learn new skills, such as automation tools, scripting, and cloud platforms, regardless of age. Many professionals transition into DevOps later in their careers by gaining relevant certifications and hands-on experience.

What is DevOps change velocity?

DevOps change velocity refers to the speed at which development and operations teams can implement, test, and deploy changes to software systems. It is a key metric for measuring the efficiency of continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) processes, often supported by automation tools like Jenkins or GitLab. Higher change velocity enables faster delivery of features and fixes, improving overall software agility.

Is DevOps a high paying job?

DevOps roles are generally well-paid due to the high demand for skills in automation, cloud platforms, and continuous integration. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and certifications, but they tend to be above average compared to many other IT positions.

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps professionals continue to play a vital role in automating and streamlining software development and deployment processes, with AI tools enhancing tasks like monitoring, testing, and incident response. While AI automates certain repetitive tasks, DevOps skills in scripting, cloud platforms, and CI/CD pipelines remain essential for managing complex systems effectively.

DevOps Engineer

Droyd Robotics

San Francisco, CA • On-site

$120K - $200K/yr

Full-time

Posted 18 days ago

Job description

About the Team
Droyd builds autonomous robotic systems that automate repetitive manual work in real environments. We design and manufacture our hardware in-house, which means iteration, fabrication, and execution all happen under one roof.
Our software doesn't just run in the cloud - it has to deploy reliably across real robots, Jetsons, and internal systems used for testing and demos. Our engineering team works across robotics, embedded systems, and edge infrastructure, and we need strong operational foundations to support fast iteration and reliable releases.
About the Role
As a DevOps Engineer at Droyd, you will own the systems that make software deployment reliable across our robots and edge infrastructure. You will build release processes, improve deployment confidence, and create operational tooling that supports both engineering velocity and fleet reliability.
A central part of this role is dealing with the realities of Jetson-based systems: cross-compilation from x86_64 to aarch64, JetPack quirks, OTA workflows, and the infrastructure needed to keep a distributed hardware fleet working.
This role is based on-site in San Francisco, CA.
In This Role, You'll
Release & Deployment
  • Build and maintain release and deployment pipelines for robots and edge systems
  • Own operational workflows across local development, Jetson devices, and production environments
  • Improve deployment confidence, reproducibility, and rollback safety across the fleet

Fleet & Edge Infrastructure
  • Improve OTA and fleet management workflows for deployed hardware
  • Handle cross-compilation workflows from x86_64 to aarch64 for Jetson-based systems
  • Work on the infrastructure behind certs, JWKS, QUIC, and other reliability-critical systems

Process & Collaboration
  • Work closely with robotics and software teams to standardize release, update, and system management practices
  • Drive process improvements in messy real-world systems

Work Environment & Schedule
  • On-site in San Francisco, CA
  • Full-time

Compensation: $120K-$200K base salary, plus equity
We're Looking For Candidates Who
  • Have strong DevOps or infrastructure engineering experience
  • Have deep Linux and Ubuntu experience
  • Have hands-on experience with JetPack and Jetson-based systems
  • Have experience with Docker Compose, systemd, fleet management, or OTA workflows
  • Can design practical deployment systems for hardware and edge environments
  • Have strong technical judgment and can drive process improvements in messy real-world systems

Nice to have:
  • Experience with Balena or Balena Etcher
  • Experience with embedded Linux or robotics deployments
  • Experience supporting cert, auth, or transport infrastructure in production systems

About Droyd
Droyd builds autonomous robotic systems that operate in real production environments. We design the hardware, develop the control stack, and generate the data that enables generalist robotics.
If we do this right, robots stop being demos and start being infrastructure.
Join us and help build the systems that make it real.
