What is DevOps Support?

DevOps Support refers to the team or role responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting the infrastructure, tools, and processes that help development and operations teams work together efficiently. They monitor systems, automate deployments, handle incidents, and ensure smooth CI/CD (Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery) pipelines. DevOps Support professionals bridge gaps between software development and IT operations, aiming to improve deployment speed, reliability, and system uptime. They also assist with configuration management, cloud services, and resolving issues that arise in both development and production environments.

What are some common challenges faced in a DevOps Support role, and how can they be addressed?

DevOps Support professionals often encounter challenges such as balancing rapid deployment schedules with maintaining system stability, troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues, and ensuring effective collaboration between development and operations teams. Addressing these challenges typically involves adopting automation tools for deployment and monitoring, setting clear communication protocols, and continuously learning about new technologies and best practices. Building strong relationships with both development and IT staff also helps in quickly resolving incidents and preventing future issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Support professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Support professional, you need a solid understanding of system administration, scripting, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) concepts, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), containerization tools (such as Docker and Kubernetes), automation frameworks, and certifications like AWS Certified DevOps Engineer are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are vital soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills enable seamless deployment, high system reliability, and proactive issue resolution in dynamic IT environments.

What is the difference between Devops Support vs System Administrator?

AspectDevops SupportSystem Administrator
CertificationsLinux, AWS, Azure, Docker, KubernetesCompTIA Linux+, Microsoft Certified, Cisco certifications
Work EnvironmentCloud platforms, automation tools, CI/CD pipelinesOn-premises servers, network infrastructure, user management
Industry UsageTech companies, SaaS providers, cloud servicesEnterprises, government agencies, IT departments
Job FocusAutomation, deployment, continuous integration, cloud infrastructureSystem maintenance, user support, network management

While both roles involve managing IT systems, Devops Support focuses on automation, cloud infrastructure, and continuous deployment, often working with development teams. System Administrators primarily handle on-premises systems, network management, and user support. The roles overlap in system management but differ in scope and tools used.

Can I learn Devops Support in 3 months?

Learning Devops Support in three months is possible if you have prior experience in IT and dedicate focused time to studying core concepts such as automation, scripting, cloud platforms, and tools like Docker and Jenkins. However, mastering all aspects typically requires ongoing learning and practical experience beyond this timeframe.

Is Devops Support a high paying job?

Devops Support roles typically offer competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. Professionals with skills in automation, cloud platforms, and scripting tend to earn higher wages, especially with certifications like AWS or Azure. Overall, it is considered a well-paying IT support position within the tech industry.

A Day in the Life

We’re looking for a Staff Engineer DevOps to join our Platform Engineering & Operations team as a hands‑on individual-contributor engineer, helping to build and maintain the infrastructure underneath Lendistry’s lending platform. You’ll work on cloud architecture, security posture, and developer experience across a regulated financial services environment — and help support fellow engineers so we can grow without compromising reliability or compliance.

Who We Are

We’re proud to be the nation’s largest minority‑led, tech‑savvy lender for small businesses and commercial real estate. As a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and Community Development Entity (CDE), our mission is all about creating economic opportunities and fueling growth for small business owners and their communities. Join us as we pave the way with innovative financing and financial education!

What You’ll Be DoingCollaboration & Mentorship Work

As a hands‑on individual contributor engineer on the Platform Engineering & Operations team, without formal people‑management responsibilities. Help mentor junior engineers on the team, sharing knowledge as they grow their skills. Provide input and feedback on the technical roadmap for infrastructure and platform engineering.

Cloud Architecture & Infrastructure

Support cloud architecture and account management across development, staging, and production environments for a regulated lending platform. Help implement and maintain infrastructure‑as‑code and GitOps practices across infrastructure operations. Support container orchestration across multiple deployable services and cloud accounts.

Security, Identity & Compliance

Support identity management, account‑level security posture, secrets management, and KMS key practices. Assist security and compliance teams with audits and vendor/security assessments for a regulated financial services platform.

Developer Experience & CI/CD

Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines across multiple repositories, from build through environment‑gated production deployments. Support developer experience and internal tooling improvements for engineering teams.

Reliability & Incident Management

Participate in on‑call and incident‑response practices, including postmortems, for a platform where downtime directly impacts loan funding and servicing.

AI‑Native Platform Engineering

Explore and help integrate AI‑assisted engineering tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) into infrastructure workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and internal tooling. Support the adoption of AI‑driven observability practices — anomaly detection, predictive alerting, and AI‑assisted root‑cause analysis — layered on top of existing monitoring stacks. Help support the infrastructure needs of ML/AI‑driven product features (e.g., underwriting and fraud models), including model serving, inference monitoring, and compute scaling for AI workloads. Contribute to self‑service internal tooling and golden paths that make it easier for engineers to ship safely.

Your Areas of Knowledge and Expertise
