What exactly does DevOps do?

A DevOps Software Engineer is responsible for integrating software development and IT operations to improve deployment frequency, reliability, and automation. They work with tools like CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms, and configuration management to streamline software delivery and ensure system stability.

Is DevOps full of coding?

DevOps Software Engineers often write code to automate deployment, manage infrastructure, and improve system reliability. While coding is a key skill, the role also involves collaboration, scripting, and working with tools like Jenkins, Docker, and Kubernetes, making it a blend of development and operations tasks.

What are DevOps Software Engineers?

DevOps Software Engineers are IT professionals who combine software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) to streamline the software delivery process. They are responsible for automating workflows, managing infrastructure, and ensuring continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines run smoothly. By bridging the gap between development and operations teams, DevOps engineers help organizations deliver software faster, more reliably, and with higher quality. Their work often involves using tools like Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Software Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, system administration, and automation, often with a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes), and relevant certifications like AWS Certified DevOps Engineer are typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills set outstanding candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring efficient software delivery, system reliability, and seamless collaboration between development and operations teams.

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps Software Engineers continue to be in demand as AI tools automate certain tasks but do not replace the need for skills in infrastructure, automation, and continuous integration. AI enhances DevOps workflows by improving efficiency and monitoring, making the role more focused on managing complex systems and implementing new technologies.

How does a DevOps Software Engineer typically interact with development and operations teams on a daily basis?

As a DevOps Software Engineer, you will regularly collaborate with both development and IT operations teams to streamline the software delivery process. This often involves participating in daily stand-ups, troubleshooting deployment issues, and automating workflows to bridge gaps between code development and production release. You'll be responsible for maintaining CI/CD pipelines, monitoring system health, and ensuring smooth communication between different technical teams. Effective collaboration and a proactive approach to problem-solving are key to success in this role.

Is DevOps a high paying job?

DevOps Software Engineers typically earn higher-than-average salaries due to their expertise in automation, cloud platforms, and scripting tools. Compensation varies by experience, location, and industry, but it is generally considered a well-paying role in the tech field.

Job description

Senior Support Software Engineer

We are looking for a proactive Advanced Software Engineer to join our T3 Deployment team within our Technology, Software & Robotics Engineering organization. Your job will be to develop, integrate, deploy, and troubleshoot the software that runs our automation systems in production — coordinating across Engineering, DevOps, QA, and Operations to deliver stable, high-quality production environments.

The T3 Deployment team is part of Symbotic's Technology, Software & Robotics Engineering organization, which designs, builds, and supports the AI-powered software that orchestrates our fleet of fully autonomous robots. The Deployment team is responsible for releasing, integrating, and stabilizing that software inside live customer distribution centers — bridging Engineering and Operations to take every release from build to a reliable, high-performing go-live.

Coordinate cross-functional release readiness and deployment execution with Engineering, DevOps, QA, Operations, and site teams.

Contribute to supply chain automation improvements through software development, system integration, and deployment automation.

Support and enhance CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes-based deployments, infrastructure automation, and production release activities.

Troubleshoot complex technical issues across applications, integrations, infrastructure, databases, and distributed systems.

Develop automation, tools, runbooks, and repeatable processes that reduce manual effort and improve operational reliability.

Partner with internal and external stakeholders to ensure stable delivery, timely issue resolution, and successful customer outcomes.

Participate in weekend on-call support and travel approximately 10 –20% for deployment activities, site readiness, customer environments, and critical release events.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field; equivalent work experience may be considered.

Minimum of 5 years of software engineering experience with hands-on development, automation, integration, and production support responsibilities.

Required technical skills: Kubernetes, Linux, CI/CD, DevOps, deployment automation, scripting, APIs, databases, and system integration.

Experience in supply chain automation, warehouse automation, logistics systems, robotics, ASRS, WMS, WES, or WCS environments preferred.

Core competencies: proactive ownership, technical problem solving, cross-team coordination, communication, documentation, and production urgency.

Up to 10% of travel may be required. Employees must have a valid driver's license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.

The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.
