What is a DevOps Project?

A DevOps project refers to an initiative or workflow that combines software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) practices to improve collaboration, automate processes, and accelerate software delivery. These projects typically involve implementing continuous integration, continuous delivery (CI/CD), infrastructure as code, and automated testing. The goal of a DevOps project is to shorten the development lifecycle while delivering high-quality software reliably and efficiently. Teams working on DevOps projects use various tools and practices to break down silos and foster a culture of shared responsibility.

What is the difference between Devops Project vs Devops Engineer?

AspectDevops ProjectDevops Engineer
CredentialsCertifications like AWS, Azure, Docker, JenkinsSame certifications, plus scripting and automation skills
Work EnvironmentProject-based teams, cross-functional collaborationOperational teams, continuous integration/deployment tasks
Industry UsageUsed in planning and executing DevOps initiativesHands-on role implementing DevOps practices

Devops Projects focus on planning, managing, and executing DevOps initiatives, often involving multiple teams. Devops Engineers are responsible for implementing and maintaining the tools and processes within those projects. While both roles require similar certifications and work in related environments, Projects are more strategic, whereas Engineers are more technical and hands-on.

What are some common challenges faced when managing DevOps projects, and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges in DevOps projects is fostering effective collaboration between development and operations teams, as traditional workflows can create silos. Managing continuous integration and deployment pipelines requires ongoing attention to automation, monitoring, and security, which can be complex in fast-paced environments. To overcome these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication channels, implement robust automation tools, and encourage a culture of shared responsibility. Continuous learning and process refinement are also key to ensuring DevOps projects run smoothly and deliver value.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Project Manager, you need a strong understanding of software development lifecycle, infrastructure automation, and project management methodologies, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), along with certifications like PMP or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, is highly valuable. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills are crucial for managing cross-functional teams and stakeholder expectations. These competencies are essential for ensuring efficient project delivery, seamless collaboration, and continuous improvement in fast-paced DevOps environments.

Job description

About SparkCharge
SparkCharge operates the world's largest mobile energy network, delivering clean, on-demand power for its partners. The company's suite of mobile battery systems, power hubs, and AI platforms, SparkAI, enables flexible, predictive energy deployment without reliance on the traditional grid. Through innovative Charging-as-a-Service (CaaS) platforms, SparkCharge delivers fast, flexible, and convenient EV charging built specifically for fleets. With zero setup costs, guaranteed uptime, and multiple solutions, including a Mobile Battery Charger, Off-Grid Power Hub, and a Permanent Infrastructure, you get the freedom to choose a solution that fits your operations. Whether you prefer white-glove service, a self-managed or hybrid approach, SparkCharge handles the charging so you can focus on running your business. Powered by mobile solutions, intelligent software, and unmatched customer support, SparkCharge is accelerating EV adoption by making charging effortless, scalable, and ready when you are.
About the role
SparkCharge is seeking an Operations Project Manager to support the Mobile Operations team and help scale reliable, repeatable delivery of mobile EV charging services. This role owns the planning and execution of cross-functional operational projects-especially new customer onboarding and new location launches-by building clear project plans, coordinating stakeholders, managing risks, and ensuring on-time, high-quality delivery.
You'll work closely with internal teams (Operations, Field, Warehouse/Logistics, Customer Success, Product/Engineering, Finance) as well as customers and external suppliers to deliver successful deployments and ongoing operational improvements.
What you'll do
Project delivery & execution
  • Lead end-to-end delivery of Mobile Operations projects from kickoff through launch and stabilization.
  • Build and manage project plans, timelines, milestones, and workback schedules; ensure clear ownership and accountability across teams.
  • Maintain project documentation including project charters, meeting notes, action logs, and decision logs.
  • Identify risks, issues, and dependencies early; drive mitigation plans and escalate when needed.
  • Run effective project meetings, maintain momentum, and ensure stakeholders stay aligned on scope, timing, and outcomes.

New customer onboarding & new location launches
  • Partner with Sales/Customer Success and Mobile Ops to onboard new customers and launch new charging locations.
  • Lead customer-facing kickoff calls; align on scope, success criteria, timelines, and operational requirements.
  • Coordinate internal readiness (staffing, service windows, safety requirements, equipment needs, training) to support on-time go-lives.
  • Manage a location delivery workback plan: site readiness checklist, launch readiness review, go-live coordination, and post-launch stabilization.

Site planning & layouts
  • Develop site layouts in collaboration with customers, field leadership, and internal stakeholders to enable safe and efficient mobile operations.
  • Gather site requirements (traffic flow, staging areas, access constraints, safety zones, operational hours, power considerations if relevant).
  • Document layouts and operational plans clearly for field execution (e.g., diagrams, photos/annotations, written instructions).
  • Ensure alignment with safety standards and operational best practices.
  • Ensure deployments are grounded in real-world operational constraints.
  • Conduct site visits and field ride-alongs to validate readiness and workflows.
  • Align site layouts with technician efficiency, safety standards, and asset handling realities.
  • Assess local permitting and regulatory requirements for new site deployments.
  • Coordinate with municipalities, fire departments, landlords, and regulatory authorities as needed.
  • Track permit timelines and integrate them into launch workback schedules.
  • Ensure generator, fuel storage, and temporary site operations comply with local codes.

Supplier/vendor coordination & equipment delivery
  • Coordinate with suppliers, logistics partners, and internal teams to plan and execute equipment delivery for new sites and key operational projects.
  • Track lead times, shipping schedules, receiving processes, and field deployment timelines to ensure equipment arrives on schedule and in the correct configuration.
  • Manage vendor dependencies and resolve issues related to availability, delivery timing, and documentation.
  • Establish smooth handoffs between suppliers → warehouse → field teams; confirm readiness for deployment.

Operational improvement & standardization
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across Mobile Ops (process standardization, SOP/playbook development, training rollouts, safety improvements).
  • Help define and track operational KPIs for projects (on-time launch, readiness completion, utilization, SLA adherence, uptime, cost-to-serve).
  • Drive retrospectives and incorporate lessons learned into repeatable launch and delivery processes.

Communication & stakeholder management
  • Provide clear status updates to the VP of Operations and Mobile Ops leaders: progress, risks, decisions needed, and next steps.
  • Translate operational needs into actionable plans for cross-functional partners.
  • Communicate changes proactively and ensure stakeholders understand tradeoffs and clear decision points.

Financial & Cost-to-Serve Accountability
  • Track project-level costs and ensure deployments align with cost-to-serve benchmarks.
  • Monitor equipment utilization, staffing levels, and vendor costs during launch.
  • Partner with Finance to validate CapEx/OpEx impact of new site launches.
  • Surface margin risks early and propose corrective actions.
  • Support vendor negotiations and cost validation as needed.

Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in operations project management, implementation/project delivery, or field operations program management-preferably in hardware-enabled services, logistics, fleet operations, energy/cleantech, or field service.
  • Proven track record delivering cross-functional projects with multiple stakeholders, tight timelines, and real-world operational constraints.
  • Experience working directly with customers on implementation/onboarding and managing expectations through launch.
  • Comfortable coordinating suppliers/vendors and managing lead times, delivery schedules, and dependencies
  • Strong organizational skills: project planning, prioritization, risk management, and follow-through.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), including customer-facing communication.
  • Proficiency with project tools (Asana/Jira/Monday/Smartsheet) and spreadsheets (Excel/Google Sheets).

Nice to have
  • EV charging, mobility, fleet, energy, or infrastructure-adjacent experience.
  • Experience with site planning and basic layout development for operations (warehouse, fleet, field service, deployment environments).
  • Familiarity with safety practices and operational readiness standards

The pay range for this role is:
85,000 - 100,000 USD per year (Somerville)
