What is a DevOps manager?

A DevOps Manager is a professional who leads and oversees the implementation of DevOps practices within an organization. They are responsible for bridging the gap between development and operations teams, ensuring smooth collaboration, and automating processes to improve software delivery speed and reliability. DevOps Managers also manage the infrastructure, monitor system performance, and ensure that security and compliance standards are met. Their role is crucial in fostering a culture of continuous integration, deployment, and improvement.

What does a DevOps manager do?

As a DevOps manager, your job is to oversee both a software development process and its continued operation after release. In this role, you may determine how or if to integrate cloud systems into your development plan, evaluate performance on each operating system or environment, and otherwise help streamline software delivery. Many DevOps managers perform a variety of tasks, ranging from managing teams to testing products or setting up contracts with customers. This makes flexibility and the ability to adapt to different needs in a time-sensitive environment essential to your success in this field. Many companies are still deciding how to integrate DevOps into their overall planning and structure, so the precise duties of your job may change over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Manager, you need a strong background in systems administration, cloud infrastructure, automation, and continuous integration/delivery (CI/CD), typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/Azure, and certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Azure DevOps Engineer are highly valued. Exceptional leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help you manage cross-functional teams and drive process improvements. These competencies are critical for ensuring seamless software delivery, operational efficiency, and alignment between development and IT operations.

What are some of the common challenges a DevOps manager faces when leading cross-functional teams?

A DevOps Manager frequently encounters challenges in aligning development, operations, and QA teams towards shared goals, especially in organizations transitioning to DevOps practices. Managing communication gaps, balancing competing priorities, and fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement are key hurdles. Additionally, staying current with rapidly evolving tools and technologies while ensuring the team's skills remain up-to-date can be demanding. Addressing resistance to change and ensuring security and compliance within automated pipelines are also common challenges in this role.

  • Act as a project manager for cross-functional revenue initiatives across Marketing, Sales, and Customer Success.
  • Identify bottlenecks in the lead to cash process to help increase top-line ARR and reduce revenue leakage.
  • Standardize workflows across our GTM teams to reduce operational overhead and build consistent expectations.

Data Analytics and Interbal Engineering

  • Partner with the Data team on data governance, establishing a metric dictionary to enable GTM teams to build their own accurate dashboards and analyses
  • Architect and build internal automation and tooling solutions using Claude Code to significantly reduce administrative tasks for GTM teams, working with GTM Engineering to deploy and host custom-built tools.

Strategic Alignment and AI Acceleration

  • Serve as a proactive thought partner to GTM leadership (Sales, Marketing, and Customer Success), providing timely, data-driven insights and advice to drive thoughtful growth.
  • Champion an AI-first operating model across the GTM organization, ensuring strategic planning and operational execution are assisted and accelerated by AI.
  • Assist in GTM Enablement efforts, teaching managers and team members how to leverage AI tools to unlock productivity and eliminate low-value admin tasks in their daily work.
Working at Workstream
  • We operate with urgency, ownership, and a growth mindset
  • This is not a traditional 9-to-5 role-we value accountability, flexibility, and getting results
  • If you thrive in high-growth environments and are passionate about building from scratch, we'd love to connect
