Candidates should choose based on their interest in automation versus cloud infrastructure management.

What is a DevOps engineer?

A DevOps Engineer is an IT professional who combines software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) to shorten the development life cycle and provide continuous delivery with high software quality. While most DevOps Engineer roles require some experience, it is possible to get started in a junior or entry-level remote DevOps position if you have foundational skills in coding, cloud platforms, and automation tools. Gaining certifications, working on personal or open-source projects, and showcasing your skills through a strong portfolio can improve your chances of landing a remote DevOps role even without professional experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an entry-level remote DevOps engineer?

To thrive as an entry-level remote DevOps Engineer, you need foundational knowledge of software development, system administration, and basic scripting (such as Python or Bash), often supported by a computer science degree or relevant coursework. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS, Azure, or GCP), version control systems (Git), and CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions) is highly beneficial, and certifications like AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner can be an advantage. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation skills are crucial for working independently and collaborating virtually with teams. These skills ensure you can efficiently automate processes, manage infrastructure, and contribute to reliable, scalable systems in a remote work environment.

What are common challenges faced by entry-level remote DevOps engineers and how can they be overcome?

Entry-level remote DevOps engineers often encounter challenges such as limited hands-on exposure to complex systems, difficulty in effective communication with distributed teams, and steep learning curves with automation tools and cloud platforms. To overcome these, it's helpful to actively seek mentorship from senior team members, participate in regular virtual meetings, and make use of documentation and collaborative tools like Slack or Jira. Proactively working on small automation projects and utilizing online resources can also accelerate your learning and confidence in the role.

Job description

We are looking for a DevOps Engineer who thrives on making development and operations teams more efficient. In this role, you'll design and build tooling that abstracts away complexity, empowering developers to spend more time focused on building great products. If you enjoy solving problems, streamlining workflows, and driving productivity across teams, this is an opportunity to make a big impact.

We are dedicated to empowering stakeholders across the entire foodservice ecosystem (operators, distributors, manufacturers) with efficiency and unprecedented visibility. With a diverse portfolio of over a dozen brands, our mission is clear: to reduce costs, streamline the foodservice supply chain, and propel the industry from manual to automated.

Today, we are one of the largest players in foodservice, with over 200K operator locations across North America and over $50 billion of aggregated spend volume. Our commitment to foodservice excellence is proven in four distinct areas of value: Digital Procurement Network, Fresh Solutions, Supply Chain Management, and Software. Buyers Edge Platform is not just a provider – we are a strategic partner on the journey towards a more efficient, connected, and automated future for the foodservice industry.

We are focused on performance, not presence. What matters is not that you are sitting in front of your computer from 9am to 5pm, but rather that you build highly effective and efficient software within agreed timelines. In practice, this might mean working extra hours some days to hit that while having other days that allow for more free time and recovery. Our goal is for Buyers Edge Platform to be a place where people are able to work in a way that is the most efficient and effective for them. This will enable us all to enjoy the solutions we build and the team we are on.

This position is remotely based, or it can also be hybrid out of one of our offices. We are unable to offer work sponsorship for this role.

  • Create relationships with the development teams to progress towards common goals.
  • Monitoring and maintaining computer systems and networks.
  • Infrastructure as code, develop tools to deploy infrastructure for development environments.
  • Containerize applications to improve deployments and application resilience.

  • Responding in a timely manner to service issues and requests
  • Good understanding of security benchmarking
  • Managing development resources and access controls
  • Occasional after-hours work
  • Internal tooling development to improve operational efficiency and self-service solutions

About you:

  • 2 years' experience in a DevOps position
  • 3 years' experience in Software Engineering.
  • 2 years' experience with Amazon Web Services
  • Experience running Kubernetes / EKS in production environments.
  • Competent at least one scripting language such as Bash, Python, or GOLang. GOLang is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CI tools like CircleCI, Jenkins, Github Actions and GitLab
  • Professional experience with configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet and Chef.
  • Strong knowledge with an orchestrator tool such as Terraform or Cloud Formation.
  • GIT
  • Experience with monitoring tools, APM, Logging and Infrastructure.
  • Brief Experience working with MySQL, Amazon Aurora, and Redshift.

Not sure you meet every qualification? Studies show that diverse applicants often hesitate to apply unless they check every box. At Buyers Edge Platform, we value authenticity and inclusion—if you're excited about the role, we encourage you to apply. You might be exactly who we're looking for!

What's in this for you?

  • Great benefits from day one. We offer medical, dental, vision, FSA, company-paid life insurance, and more—plus a 401(k) with company match.
