What is a DevOps associate?

DevOps Associates are professionals who support the integration of development and operations teams by automating workflows, improving deployment processes, and enhancing collaboration. They typically assist in managing code releases, infrastructure as code, and monitoring systems while ensuring continuous integration and delivery pipelines run smoothly. DevOps Associates often work with cloud platforms, configuration management tools, and scripting languages to optimize software development and deployment cycles. Their role is vital in reducing manual errors, increasing efficiency, and ensuring rapid delivery of high-quality software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Associate, you need a solid understanding of software development, system administration, and automation, often complemented by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Git, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer) is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a collaborative mindset help you work effectively with cross-functional teams and respond to evolving technical needs. These competencies enable seamless integration and deployment processes, improve system reliability, and support agile development cycles.

What are some common challenges faced by DevOps associates when integrating new tools into existing workflows?

DevOps Associates often encounter challenges when integrating new tools, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, maintaining security standards, and minimizing downtime during deployment. They must also coordinate closely with both development and operations teams to align on processes and avoid disruptions. Effective communication, thorough testing, and incremental rollouts are key strategies to address these challenges and ensure a smooth transition.

Job description

About Adarga

Adarga builds AI systems for customers working in Defence, Security and Resilience. With a core focus on our multimodal data fusion platform, we combine the value of humans and agents to transform information overload into decision advantage.

Our team is a hybrid of domain specialists and technologists. We believe this layering of experience is key to building cutting edge AI that is operationally relevant. With our foundations set in NLP, computational linguistics and graph technology we now draw on the latest ideas in agentic AI and knowledge representation, as we set our sights firmly on defining and building the next era of sovereign AI capability.

To work at Adarga you have to care deeply about the mission. We exist to support those with the ultimate task: upholding the liberties and values that define our society. We want people who are comfortable with uncertainty, who want to own decisions, who want to drive a vision.

The Role

Adarga is growing its Platform Engineering team and we’re looking for a Platform Engineer to join us. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to develop their their platform or DevOps skills in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

You’ll work alongside experienced platform and software engineers, learning modern DevOps practices used to maintain a containerised microservices architecture. Our product is cloud native and highly automated – but there’s always more to build, improve and optimise. You’ll receive committed mentoring from an experienced team while making a genuine contribution to production systems that matter.

Your days will be dynamic: a mixture of development, learning, and supporting our product releases. You’ll gain exposure to a wide range of technologies and have a clear path toward increased responsibility and personal growth.

What you’ll be doing
  • Assist in maintaining and improving our cloud infrastructure and account structure
  • Contribute to our Infrastructure as Code codebase, primarily using Terraform
  • Support the deployment and operation of containerised applications in Kubernetes
  • Help automate infrastructure delivery pipelines and CI/CD workflows
  • Assist in monitoring, logging, and observability tasks across our platform
  • Support disaster recovery testing and data backup/restore processes
  • Work with software engineers and data scientists to understand and support their infrastructure needs
  • Learn and apply DevSecOps principles, integrating security into everyday workflows
  • Participate in incident response and troubleshooting under guidance from senior engineers
What you’ll get
  • Make a real impact – our flagship products will rely on the systems you help build and support
  • Continuous learning across a wide array of cloud-native technologies
  • Committed mentoring and training from an experienced platform engineering team
  • A clear path to increased responsibility, leadership, and personal growth
  • Exposure to defence, national security, and AI/ML workloads at production scale
Essential requirements
  • Experience with US Government Cloud systems
  • Experience in the FEDRAMP process
  • Hands-on Linux systems administration (or equivalent practical experience)
  • Practical experience with GCP and AWS services and concepts
  • Experience with Kubernetes, ideally GKE, and container fundamentals (Docker/Kubernetes)
  • Scripting ability in Bash, Python, or similar for automation tasks
  • Strong networking fundamentals (DNS, HTTP/S, TCP/IP, firewalls, load balancing)
  • Proficiency with Git and collaborative engineering workflows
  • Familiarity with GitOps and declarative configuration management
  • Ability to effectively leverage AI-assisted tools to accelerate engineering workflows
  • Strong problem-solving skills, ownership, and willingness to learn
  • Clear communication and effective team collaboration
Desirable requirements
  • Exposure to multi-cloud environments (AWS/GCP/Oracle) and migration patterns
  • Experience with Terraform/OpenTofu and Terragrunt
  • Experience with CI/CD and GitOps tooling (GitHub Actions, Atlantis, Argo CD)
  • Experience operating Kubernetes platforms in production (RBAC, ingress, observability)
  • Awareness of cloud security and compliance principles (least privilege, CIS, ISO 27001)
  • Experience with monitoring/observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki and Tempo)
  • Relevant certification (e.g., Associate Cloud Engineer, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate)
Further information

You will take part in cross-functional and cross-team communication to enhance collaboration. These will take the form of knowledge shares, reading groups, chapter group meetings, workshops and innovation projects.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a candidate at the start of their platform engineering career to develop their skills in an exciting, technology-led company working on genuinely important problems.

Interview Process
  • Getting to know you: In the first call, our recruiter will learn about you and your story to check a potential fit for Adarga. This is also a chance for you to ask initial questions about the role and company.

  • Team Interview: You’ll meet with your potential team members who will take a deeper dive into the technical aspects of the role. Expect some high-level technical questions, competency-based questions, and another chance to ask questions.

  • Technical Interview: You’ll work with your potential team members on technical questions and challenges. This will be a collaborative session – we’re interested in how you think and approach problems, not whether you have all the answers.

  • Final Interview: The last stage! Here we’ll gain a better understanding of your experience to date, discuss different projects you’ve worked on and the impact you’ve had, and give you an opportunity to meet more of the wider team.
