What is a developer?

A software developer—sometimes referred to as a software engineer, computer programmer, or computer scientist—designs and develops programs, applications, websites, and databases. Their responsibilities include creation, testing, and modification of the code that runs programs within IT systems. Software developers generally have a bachelor’s degree in computer science and are familiar with writing code in at least one programming language.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, paired with a solid understanding of algorithms and software development principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes cloud platforms or specific frameworks is typical. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for building reliable, maintainable software and collaborating efficiently within development teams.

What are some common challenges developers face when working on large-scale projects, and how can they overcome them?

Job description

Denodo Developer Contract Length: 6+ months
Location: Dallas, Texas (hybrid 3 days onsite) ****LOCAL CANDIDATES ONLY****
We're looking for a Denodo Developer to join a data engineering team building out modern, virtualized data integration solutions. In this role, you'll design and maintain the views that connect disparate data sources into unified, high-performing datasets, while helping the broader organization get faster answers from their data without the overhead of traditional ETL pipelines. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys solving performance puzzles, writing clean SQL/VQL, and working closely with cross-functional teams to turn data challenges into scalable virtual data solutions.
This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of data architecture and performance engineering, building solutions that make data faster and easier to access across the business, without duplicating it. If you like the challenge of optimizing queries, architecting clean data views, and being the go-to person for virtual data integration, we'd love to talk!
Qualifications

  • 4+ years of hands-on SQL experience across OLTP, Data Warehouse, and Big Data environments
  • 4+ years working as a Data Analyst, Data Engineer, or SQL Developer
  • 2+ years writing moderately to highly complex SQL queries and stored procedures
  • 2+ years of direct experience with Denodo
  • A track record of applying query optimization techniques to real-world performance problems
  • Experience building and supporting REST and SOAP-based data services
  • Comfort troubleshooting data quality and performance issues independently
  • Experience working within agile teams, using tools like Jira for ticketing and GitLab (or similar) for version control
  • Solid understanding of data modeling principles, including dimensional modeling
  • A strong grasp of data integrity best practices
  • Clear communicator, self-starter, and someone who thrives in a collaborative team setting

Responsibilities

  • Design and build base views, derived views, integration views, and summary views within the Denodo platform
  • Write efficient SQL and VQL to support data transformation and integration across multiple source systems
  • Partner with data consumers to identify and resolve long-running or inefficient queries, improving performance across the platform
  • Build out new monitoring views and dashboards to track the health and performance of the Denodo environment
  • Collaborate with business and technical stakeholders to translate integration needs into virtual data solutions
  • Produce clear functional and technical documentation for the data solutions you build

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to traditional ETL tools such as Informatica or Ab Initio
  • Python development experience
  • Familiarity with Master Data Management (MDM) tools
  • Big Data experience (Hadoop, MongoDB)
  • Experience with Postgres and/or cloud platforms
