What is a Developer Advocate?

A developer advocate promotes the interests of developers and helps make it easier for them to use platforms for their work. In this job, you are the voice of a community of developers who may have insight into enhancing or changing a product. Your duties are to listen to the issues that developers are having while using a platform, research possible ways to address these problems, and bring them to the attention of the company that makes the product. You also help ensure that developers can perform their work easily by having access to all the features and capabilities of the software.

What is a Developer Advocate?

A Developer Advocate is a professional who acts as a bridge between a company that creates technology products and the developer community that uses them. Their primary role is to help developers understand, use, and succeed with the company's products by creating resources, giving talks, writing documentation, and gathering feedback. Developer Advocates also represent the needs and opinions of the developer community within their organization to help shape product direction. Ultimately, they work to build trust, foster engagement, and ensure the success of both developers and the product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Developer Advocate?

To thrive as a Developer Advocate, you need a strong background in software development, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of developer communities, often supported by experience in coding and public speaking. Familiarity with programming languages, API documentation tools, and platforms like GitHub, as well as experience with content creation and technical presentations, is highly beneficial. Outstanding Developer Advocates excel in empathy, storytelling, and relationship-building, enabling them to connect authentically with diverse audiences. These skills are critical for bridging the gap between product teams and users, fostering engagement, and driving the adoption of technology solutions.

How does a Developer Advocate typically balance coding responsibilities with community engagement?

Developer Advocates often split their time between writing code—such as building demos, contributing to open source projects, or improving documentation—and engaging with developer communities through conferences, online forums, and workshops. Finding the right balance can be challenging, as both technical output and strong communication are essential. Many teams encourage Advocates to allocate specific days or hours to focus on coding, while reserving other time for outreach, feedback collection, and content creation. This structure helps Developer Advocates stay technically sharp while remaining deeply connected to their audience and the broader community.

What is the difference between Developer Advocate vs Developer Evangelist?

AspectDeveloper AdvocateDeveloper Evangelist
Required CredentialsTechnical background, often in software development or engineeringSimilar technical skills, often with marketing or communication experience
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with developers, product teams, and marketingFocuses on community engagement, public speaking, and outreach
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, open-source projectsTech companies, community organizations, startups

Both roles require strong technical skills and community engagement. While Developer Advocates focus on bridging developers with products through technical content and support, Developer Evangelists emphasize promoting products via public speaking and community events. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in their primary focus: technical advocacy versus marketing outreach.

How much do developer advocates make?

Developer advocates typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in cloud platforms or APIs can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $160,000. Compensation may also include benefits such as stock options and professional development opportunities.

Job description

Developer Advocate

The Teradata Developer Relations team is a global team within the Product organization. We build practical technical resources, engage developer communities, and help builders succeed with Teradata's agentic development tools and Autonomous Knowledge Platform. Our work sits at the intersection of developer experience, content, community, product feedback, and go-to-market enablement.

As a Developer Advocate, you will help data engineers, analysts, data scientists, and AI builders understand what they can build with Teradata - and how to get started quickly. You will own technical enablement, including quickstarts, how-to guides, demos, Agent Skills, workshops, videos, and feedback loops that improve the product experience. The right person is technical enough to build credible examples, clear enough to teach technical concepts simply, and curious enough to experiment with emerging agentic workflows before the playbook is fully written.

  • Create technical content including tutorials, videos, demos, blogs, how-to guides, workshops, and Agent Skills that help developers build with Teradata.

  • Explore agent-driven development scenarios and share practical experiments with the developer community.

  • Run and support community programs including office hours, workshops, webinars, DevTalk livestreams, meetups, and other developer engagement activities.

  • Answer developer questions, troubleshoot common issues, and escal...?

  • Contribute to KPIs that measure developer adoption, engagement, satisfaction, content quality, and advocacy impact.

  • Speak at developer conferences and events to represent Teradata publicly and build brand awareness in the developer ecosystem.

  • Track developer, AI, and ecosystem trends to help position Teradata within the broader developer landscape.

  • Partner with engineers, architects, product managers, partners, and builders to understand developer needs and improve the developer experience.

  • Review, test, and provide feedback on early product previews, partner integrations, demos, and developer-facing assets to ensure technical accuracy and usability.

Who You'll Work With:

You will work as part of the Teradata Developer Relations team within the Product organization, collaborating closely with engineers, architects, product managers, developer experience, content, and go-to-market teams. You will engage regularly with the broader developer community - including data engineers, analysts, data scientists, and AI builders - to understand their needs, reduce friction, and improve the Teradata developer experience. You will also partner with partners, field teams, and community programs to amplify Teradata's presence in key developer ecosystems.

What Makes You a Qualified Candidate:
  • 2+ years of related technology experience in roles such as developer, developer advocate, solutions architect, technical product manager, technical writer, or developer educator.

  • Experience independently building technical content, code samples, demos, tutorials, or workshops for developer audiences.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Working knowledge of software development practices, APIs, authentication, testing, CI/CD, version control, and distributed systems.

  • Proficiency in Python and at least one other common programming language, such as JavaScript, Go, or Rust.

  • Experience managing code repositories and collaborative development workflows, including GitHub.

What You'll Bring:
  • Experience with common developer tools such as VS Code, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, or similar AI-assisted development environments.

  • Familiarity with the analytics ecosystem, including data ingestion, data management, model development, and model deployment workflows.

  • Working knowledge of AI development techniques, tools, and frameworks, including Model Context Protocol (MCP), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Agent Skills, LangChain, and LangGraph.

  • Ability to troubleshoot common developer issues, improve content or demos based on feedback, and communicate recurring friction to the right internal teams.

  • Comfort presenting technical content in external settings such as webinars, workshops, meetups, or developer conferences.

  • Independent, curious approach to building technical fluency across product setup, APIs, documentation, and core developer workflows.

  • Organized and accountable working style, with the ability to own scoped content, community, or event workstreams from planning through follow-up.

As a Developer Advocate at Teradata, you will help define how developers experience and build with Teradata's Autonomous Knowledge Platform and agentic development tools. Your work will directly shape the technical resources, community programs, and feedback loops that enable builders to succeed - and that connect developer insight to product, documentation, and go-to-market priorities.
