Developer Advocacy information

What is developer advocacy?

Developer Advocacy is a role focused on building relationships between software developers and a company or product. Developer Advocates help developers understand and use products or technologies by creating technical content, giving talks, organizing events, and gathering feedback. They act as a bridge between the developer community and internal teams, ensuring that developers' needs are considered in product development. Their goal is to foster a strong, engaged developer community and improve the developer experience.

How does a developer advocate typically collaborate with both internal product teams and external developer communities?

Developer Advocates serve as a bridge between internal product teams and the broader developer community. Internally, they relay feedback from external users to help shape product roadmaps and improve developer experiences. Externally, they create technical content, lead workshops, and actively engage on forums to educate and support users. This dual collaboration ensures that products meet real-world needs while fostering a positive and informed community around the technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a developer advocate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer Advocate, you need a solid technical background in software development, strong programming abilities, and a deep understanding of developer communities. Familiarity with documentation tools, API platforms, and often public speaking or content creation tools is essential, as well as experience with relevant languages and frameworks. Exceptional communication, empathy, and the ability to build relationships make someone stand out in this position. These skills are crucial for effectively bridging the gap between product teams and developer communities, ensuring products meet user needs and fostering adoption.

What is the difference between Developer Advocacy vs Developer Relations?

AspectDeveloper AdvocacyDeveloper Relations
Primary FocusPromoting developer tools, engaging with developer communities, creating contentBuilding and maintaining relationships between companies and developer communities
Work EnvironmentTechnical outreach, content creation, public speakingCommunity management, event organization, communication strategies
Required CredentialsTechnical background, coding skills, communication skillsTechnical understanding, communication, community engagement experience

Developer Advocacy and Developer Relations often overlap but differ in focus. Advocacy emphasizes promoting tools and engaging developers through content and outreach, while Relations centers on building long-term community relationships. Both roles require technical knowledge and communication skills, but their day-to-day activities and goals vary slightly.

How do you become a developer advocate?

To become a developer advocate, you typically need strong programming skills, experience with relevant technologies, and the ability to communicate technical concepts effectively. Gaining experience through software development, contributing to open source projects, and building a personal brand via blogging or speaking at events can help. Many roles also value knowledge of developer tools, community engagement, and sometimes certifications in specific platforms or languages.

How much do developer advocates make?

Developer advocates typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in cloud platforms or APIs can earn higher salaries, often supplemented with benefits and bonuses.

Job description

From Fivetranโ€™s founding until now, our mission has remained the same: to make access to data as simple and reliable as electricity. With Fivetran, customer data arrives in their warehouses, canonical and ready to query, with no engineering or maintenance required. Weโ€™re proud that more organizations continue to leverage our technology every day to become truly data-driven.

About Us

Fivetran and dbt Labs are bringing together two industry-leading companies with a shared mission: helping organizations unlock the full value of their data.

Together, we're delivering the data infrastructure layer that helps organizations move, transform, and trust their data โ€” from the moment data moves, through every transformation, to the context teams and AI systems rely on.

Fivetran helps organizations automate data movement across the systems, clouds, engines, and tools they rely on. dbt Labs pioneered analytics engineering, helping teams transform data into reliable, governed insights. Together, we support thousands of organizations as they build a trusted foundation for analytics, AI, and better business decisions.

As we bring our teams and technology together, we're building on the strengths of both companies while continuing to deliver the products and experiences our customers know and trust. It's an exciting time to join us: we're creating a company with the scale, talent, and technology to help more organizations put their data to work with greater speed, confidence, and impact.

During this transition period, you may see references to both Fivetran and dbt Labs throughout our recruiting process as we integrate our teams, systems, and career sites.

About the Role

We're looking for a Senior Developer Experience Advocate to join the Developer Experience (DX) team at dbt Labs โ€” a team of dbt experts on the forefront of serving dbt developers and building the next generation of data workflows. We partner across our internal product and go-to-market teams, as well as across the dbt Community, operating using the PRIME framework: Prototype, Represent, Ideate, Maintain, and Enable.

This is a senior, high-impact role for a data engineering generalist who wants to spend their time in public. You will execute developer experience and developer relations work across our product surface โ€” such as dbt State, dbt Fusion, and dbt Wizard, and the Fivetran connector SDK โ€” helping practitioners succeed with our tools and raising our thought leadership in open data infrastructure.

We are looking for someone with broad, hard-won knowledge of the data industry: how data teams actually work, where the tooling helps, and where it gets in the way. You will translate that knowledge into content, prototypes, community engagement, and product feedback. AI is reshaping parts of this landscape and you should be comfortable working with it and curious about where it goes.

This is a highly autonomous role. You will set your own priorities, communicate them clearly, and deliver high-quality work without heavy direction. In exchange you get real ownership of a focus area, significant internal and external visibility, and leadership that protects your time rather than managing your calendar. We're looking for someone who can hit the ground running โ€” shipping meaningful work within their first two weeks.

This is a full-time, fully remote position based in the United States. This role reports to the Director of Community, Developer Experience & AI.

What You'll Do
  • Design and build prototypes, reference implementations, and example repositories that show practitioners how to get real work done with our tools
  • Create working prototypes that validate product direction and accelerate engineering iteration
  • Build tooling that removes friction from common analytics engineering workflows
  • Author technical content for the dbt Developer Blog, guides, and documentation that makes complex concepts actionable for practitioners
  • Publish knowledge and best practices on data and analytics engineering that establish you as a resource in your product area
  • Develop enablement resources for internal teams and the dbt Community, and contribute to product launches as a subject matter expert
  • Represent your product area as a community voice across Community Slack, GitHub, conferences, and public forums
  • Collect and synthesize community feedback, surfacing insights to product and engineering, and bring the practitioner perspective into product design reviews
  • Identify and flag sharp edges, regressions, or gaps in the developer experience
  • Maintain and triage relevant open source repositories and community projects, contributing code and design reviews with an eye toward developer ergonomics
Skills We're Looking For
  • 5+ years in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a closely related field, with strong general knowledge of the data industry and how it is changing
  • Handsโ€‘on dbt knowledge and practitionerโ€‘level fluency
  • Expert public communication in both spoken and written technical contexts, with a track record of published articles or publicโ€‘facing content on data or analytics engineering โ€” we will want to read and watch your work
  • Strong data and analytics engineering fundamentals, including comfort with Python and SQL and the ability to contribute to open source codebases
  • Comfort and familiarity with AI, and enthusiasm for adapting AI into how you work
  • Ability to work autonomously as a selfโ€‘starter, delivering highโ€‘quality output with minimal direction, with the operational rigor to set priorities and communicate them clearly at multiple cadences
  • Strong product sense, the ability to translate user needs into concrete product feedback, and genuine enthusiasm for a publicโ€‘facing role over internal product or engineering work
Bonus Skills
  • An existing footprint in the dbt Community, or prior handsโ€‘on use of dbt tools
  • Background in developer relations, developer experience, or developer advocacy at a developer tools company
  • Experience building with or for AI coding agents, and fluency with how the AI agent ecosystem is evolving
  • Contributions to open source projects in the data ecosystem (packages, adapters, community tools)
  • Public speaking experience at data or developer conferences, and experience with Fusion and the dbt platform
