Job description

Nemours is seeking a Constable II to join our team in Wilmington, DE. 

 The Constable II provides protection for staff, patients, visitors and associates by maintaining peace and order at Nemours Children's Hospital. The Constable II works in an armed capacity with firearm and taser. 

Primary Functions 

  1. Patrolling hospital buildings, stairwells, and grounds both on foot and in vehicles to provide monitoring of interior and exterior of Hospital buildings to validate that no threats exist, and all exterior doors are secure.

  2. Prevention, detection, investigation and reporting of unlawful and unsafe activities within the Hospital and contiguous properties and buildings; investigation includes interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects, collecting, reviewing, and preserving evidence and conducting searches and surveillance.
  3. Application of non-violent verbal intervention and de-escalation skills to mitigate disruptive behavior and dangerous activity; ability to verbally de-escalate hostile situations and physically separate and control combative individuals.
  4. Provide first responder assessment of threats against staff, patients, and families. 

  5. Conduct fire, evacuation, and miscellaneous emergency management drills as require by the State of Delaware, the Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

  6. Provide access control into the Hospital and specific areas of the Hospital as well as apply visitor restrictions limitation measures instituted by the Hospital.

  7. Provide one on one patient monitoring for inpatient units; patients assist for aggressive or unstable patients; escorts for patients in custody, visitor designated as tier two or three sex offenders, and visitors with history of aggressive behavior or domestic issues; patient searches; and room safety sanitization for suicidal/homicidal patients. 
  8. Exercise the powers of detention and arrest, when necessary.
  9. Manage Public Safety entry stations that control access to the hospital.
  10. Respond to various types of alarms: door alarms, motion detectors, duress alarms, fire alarms, medical emergency alarms and other Public Safety incidents.
  11. Provide escort of unauthorized individuals from the campus and prevent patient elopement and abduction.
  12. Performs all assigned work safely adhering to established departmental rules and practices.  Reports to supervisors in a timely fashion all activities or conditions that are in the violation of established processes.
  13. Assists with crowd control and evacuations when required. 
  14. Provide safe vehicle transportation or ambulance support for patients and families, as needed.
  15. Parking enforcement and traffic control.

Requirements 

  • State of Delaware Constable License required
  • High School Diploma required, 1 year of specialized training beyond High School required
  • Must have a valid State Driver's license and be able to operate authorized hospital vehicles.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background and MMPI testing (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory).
  • Must successfully obtain and maintain requirements for certification as a Constable in accordance with the Delaware State Police Professional Licensing section as established by Delaware Code (Title 10, Chapter 56).

  • Must successfully obtain and maintain certification in the use of a Taser through Certified Axon Instructor

  • Must successfully acquire and maintain CPR and AED certifications.
