What is a destination?

A 'Destination' job typically refers to a role within the travel, tourism, or hospitality industry focused on promoting, managing, or supporting specific locations as travel destinations. These jobs can include positions such as destination marketers, travel consultants, tourism managers, and event coordinators. Professionals in these roles work to attract visitors, enhance the visitor experience, and ensure the sustainable development of a region or attraction. Their responsibilities may involve marketing campaigns, partnership development, event planning, and coordinating with local businesses and government agencies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a destination manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Destination Manager, you need expertise in tourism management, marketing, and event planning, typically supported by a degree in hospitality, tourism, or business. Familiarity with travel booking systems, CRM software, and digital marketing tools is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, cultural awareness, and creative problem-solving help build relationships and craft appealing travel experiences. These skills enable effective promotion, smooth operations, and memorable experiences that attract and retain visitors.

What are some common challenges faced by destination managers when coordinating with local partners and vendors?

Destination Managers often work closely with local partners such as hotels, tour operators, and transportation providers to deliver seamless travel experiences. A key challenge is ensuring clear and consistent communication across different cultures and languages, as well as aligning expectations regarding service quality and deliverables. Additionally, Destination Managers must be adept at handling last-minute changes, such as unexpected weather events or logistical issues, which require quick problem-solving and flexibility. Building strong relationships and having contingency plans in place are essential for overcoming these challenges.

Dismal River Club — Mullen, Nebraska
Season: Mid-May – Mid-October

Why Dismal River Club

Dismal River Club is a premier destination resort tucked into the heart of Nebraska’s breathtaking Sandhills. We blend rugged wilderness and refined comfort — offering two world-class golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak, guided authentic outdoor adventures, and rustic-luxury lodging. Our spacious clubhouse features a pool, spa, and a full bar and restaurant where our guests enjoy elevated hospitality and exceptional service.

We offer furnished, on-site employee housing, complemented by a dedicated employee recreation area.

The Opportunity

We’re seeking a Massage Therapist to join our spa team for the upcoming season. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent massage therapy graduate looking to gain hands-on experience in a professional, supportive, and high-end environment.

You’ll work with a steady flow of members and guests who value wellness, relaxation, and exceptional service—while building your skills and confidence in the industry.

As a Massage Therapist at Dismal River Club, you will:

  • Provide professional massage services tailored to individual client needs
  • Create a calm, welcoming, and relaxing guest experience
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional treatment space
  • Communicate clearly with hospitality team members regarding scheduling
  • Follow all safety, sanitation, and licensing standards
  • Represent the Dismal River Club brand through exceptional service and professionalism

What We’re Looking For

  • Graduate of an accredited massage therapy program (recent graduates encouraged to apply)
  • Valid massage therapy license in the state of Nebraska (or ability to obtain prior to start date)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Professional, dependable, and service-oriented mindset
  • Desire to learn, grow, and build experience in the massage industry
  • Willingness to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and arm movements
  • Lift, push, or pull up to 40 pounds

Compensation & Perks

  • Hourly + Commission + Gratuities
  • On-site housing
  • One meal provided each day
  • Work in a serene, high-end spa environment
  • Gain valuable experience in a destination resort setting
  • Seasonal perks and lifestyle you won’t find anywhere else
