What is a destination sales executive?

A Destination Sales Executive is a professional responsible for promoting and selling travel destinations, often on behalf of hotels, resorts, or tourism boards. They work to attract groups, events, conferences, and leisure travelers to a particular location, coordinating with local businesses and service providers. Their main goal is to increase bookings and revenue by showcasing the unique features and benefits of their destination. This role involves sales presentations, networking, attending trade shows, and building relationships with clients and travel planners.

How does a destination sales executive typically collaborate with event planners and local vendors to secure group bookings?

A Destination Sales Executive works closely with event planners to understand their needs, develop tailored proposals, and ensure a seamless experience for their groups. They also build strong relationships with local vendors—such as hotels, transportation providers, and attractions—to negotiate competitive rates and create attractive packages. This role often involves coordinating site visits, facilitating communication between all parties, and troubleshooting issues to ensure successful events and repeat business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a destination sales executive, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Destination Sales Executive, you need strong sales acumen, in-depth knowledge of the hospitality or tourism industry, and a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with CRM systems, event management software, and sales reporting tools is commonly required. These skills are crucial for driving revenue growth, securing group bookings, and ensuring client satisfaction in a competitive market.

Job description

Overview

The Sugarloaf Corporate & Group Sales Executive is a dedicated new business hunter focused on driving revenue growth through proactive outbound prospecting and strategic account development.

This role targets the Boston corporate market, Maine-based companies, and group leisure accounts, with the goal of building a sustained pipeline that positions Sugarloaf as the premier destination for corporate meetings, incentive retreats, and group travel in the Northeast.

This individual is self-directed, results-oriented, and comfortable operating independently in a fast-paced, seasonal resort environment. In addition to full-cycle new business development, this role provides coverage support for the Sales team during periods of leave, ensuring continuity of service for existing accounts while simultaneously building new revenue-generating relationships.

This full-time, year-round salaried role is benefit eligible and anticipated to start within an annual pay range of $55,000 to $65,000 (based on experience) plus commissions.

Responsibilities

New Business Development & Outbound Prospecting

  • Execute a disciplined outbound prospecting strategy targeting Boston-area corporations, Maine-headquartered companies, and regional group leisure accounts.
  • Identify, qualify, and cultivate new corporate and group leads through cold outreach, LinkedIn prospecting, trade association engagement, and networking events.
  • Develop and maintain an active pipeline of prospective clients in CRM (Delphi), with consistent activity logging, follow-up cadences, and stage progression tracking.
  • Conduct site visits, presentations, and discovery calls to convert prospects to booked business.
  • Establish and grow relationships with third-party meeting planners, DMCs, and group travel buyers who influence corporate retreat and group leisure decisions.

Corporate & Group Account Management

  • Manage the full sales cycle from initial inquiry through contract execution for corporate meeting, group ski, incentive travel, and team-building accounts.
  • Prepare and present customized proposals, group packages, and contract documents that reflect client needs and resort capabilities.
  • Collaborate closely with the service teams to ensure seamless handoff and execution once business is contracted.
  • Respond to all inbound group and corporate inquiries in a timely, professional manner, maintaining Sugarloaf’s service standards throughout the sales process.
  • Maintain accurate and current account records, including all correspondence, proposals, and contract activity

Sales Team Coverage

  • Provide coverage support for the Sales team during leave periods, managing existing account relationships and responding to client needs with continuity and professionalism.
  • Ensure no interruption to active group bookings, contracts in progress, or key account communication during the coverage period.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Sales Manager and VP of Sales & Marketing to prioritize and manage workload across both coverage and new business responsibilities.

Collaboration & Resort Engagement

  • Work cross-functionally with Food & Beverage, Lodging, Events, and Operations teams to design and package compelling group experiences.
  • Represent Sugarloaf at trade shows, corporate travel events, and prospecting trips to the Boston and greater Maine markets as directed.
  • Attend all department and resort sales meetings; contribute to weekly sales reporting and pipeline reviews.
  • Support resort-wide sales initiatives and revenue strategies as directed by the Senior Sales Manager and VP of Sales & Marketing.

Flexible work hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as business demands require.

Qualifications

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • 3–5 years of experience in hotel, resort, or destination sales with a demonstrated focus on new business development and outbound prospecting.
  • Proven track record of building a pipeline from the ground up and converting prospects to contracted group or corporate business.
  • Familiarity with the Boston corporate meetings market and/or Maine-based group travel preferred.
  • Experience with Delphi or comparable CRM/sales management software; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; confident and polished in external-facing presentations and client interactions.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage time independently and prioritize a dual-focus workload (new business + coverage).
  • Prior ski resort or outdoor/adventure hospitality experience a plus.
