Job description

Position summary This position is remote; however, candidates are expected to reside within approximately 1–2 hours of commuting distance from the Pittsburgh office. The Desktop Engineer is responsible for the development, management, and optimization of end-user computing technologies across physical and virtual platforms. This includes, as applicable, desktop imaging, application packaging, endpoint configuration and management, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), and print services. The role supports the full lifecycle of endpoint services, ensuring secure, scalable, and high-performing environments for firm users. The Desktop Engineer serves as an internal consultant to the team and broader IT department on end-user computing technologies. Job duties and responsibilities Support firm desktop imaging and deployment activities using tools such as Microsoft Configuration Manager (SCCM), Broadcom Ghost Solution Suite, or similar tools. Support endpoint configuration and mobile device management of firm laptops and desktops using tools such as Netwrix PolicyPak, Microsoft Intune, or similar tools. Develop and maintain imaging standards for physical devices, including OS deployment, driver integration, and baseline application configuration. Package applications using MSI, EXE, and other formats for deployment across physical and virtual environments, ensuring compatibility, performance, and version control. Create and maintain virtualized application packages using technologies such as Microsoft App-V, MSIX, or Cloudpager to isolate applications from the OS and improve portability. Deploy, upgrade, and manage applications to various application system platforms, ensuring consistent delivery and user experience. Design, deploy, and support print services across on-premises and cloud environments, including managing, print servers, configuring queues, and ensuring reliable and secure printing across locations. Lead the installation, implementation, and deployment of application systems. Provide advanced administration and support for application system technologies and platforms, including upgrades, version changes, and configuration management. Monitor the performance and availability of application system platforms, ensuring they remain current, up-to-date and operating optimally. Troubleshoot and resolve incidents related to desktops, applications, and printing. Monitor and act on escalated issues, problem tickets, and requests for relevant application and system areas, including timely acknowledgement of tickets and requests and providing a high level of responsiveness and customer service. Collaborate with architecture and support teams to implement upgrades and enhancements. Maintain technical documentation, including system design and support documentation, and contribute to knowledge bases for application system services. Continued development of technical knowledge and skills related to supported technologies through formal and informal professional development activities. May volunteer or be selected to serve on special committees, work groups, project teams, or escalation teams related to various firmwide IT initiatives. Initiatives may be specific one-time events (e.g., research, testing, rollouts, upgrades, installations) or ongoing activities. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements Education: Bachelor's degree in an IT-related discipline, or equivalent training and experience, required. Microsoft certifications a plus. Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting enterprise desktop and virtual desktop environments. Experience supporting Citrix and/or Azure Virtual Desktop environments. Experience with endpoint imaging, application packaging, and deployment tools (e.g., SCCM, Intune, Endpoint Policy Manager). Experience working with endpoint configuration and Mobile Device Management (MDM) technologies, including Intune, Endpoint Policy Manager, and Group Policy. Experience supporting print server technologies and cloud-based print solutions. Law firm experience and knowledge of legal industry specific applications a plus. Skills: Strong technical documentation skills, including the ability to clearly document system configurations, procedures, and solutions. Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams and explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Strong organizational skills and sound judgment, including the ability to organize and prioritize workload, manage competing priorities, adapt to changing demands, and perform effectively under pressure. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to evaluate complex technical issues and develop effective solutions. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote or hybrid work environment. Working conditions Works remotely. Occasionally called upon to work hours in excess of your normal daily schedule. Potential for in-office work requests as needed, so proximity to the office is important. Pay ranges This represents the presently anticipated low and high end of Reed Smith's pay range for this position. Actual pay may vary based on various factors, including but not limited to location and experience.
