Job Description
Purpose
BD UCC is establishing Industrial Designer capability for user-centered product design across its platforms. This role bridges aesthetics, ergonomics, usability, and engineering feasibility to deliver products that are intuitive, differentiated, and manufacturable. This individual will embed industrial design best practices into the product development lifecycle - from early-stage innovation through new product development.
Key Responsibilities
  • Industrial Design Leadership: Serve as the industrial design subject matter expert across all four UCC platforms. Establish and spread best practices, design standards, and a cohesive UCC design language.
  • User Research: Plan and conduct generative user research to understand needs, workflows, use environments, and unmet opportunities. Synthesize insights from observation, interviews, and usability feedback to inform design direction and customer requirements.
  • User-Centered Concept Development and Visualization: Lead concept generation from user and market insights. Translate user needs into product form through sketching, rendering, and prototyping.
  • Human Factors Support: Collaborate with Human Factors Engineering (HFE) through generative, formative and summative usability studies.
  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Partner with mechanical engineering and manufacturing to ensure design intent translates into producible components.

Required Qualifications
  • BS Industrial Design, Product Design, or closely related engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years of professional industrial design experience.

Skills and Experience:
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive design decisions with minimal oversight.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills; able to influence without authority across multiple business units.
  • Strong hand-sketching and visual communication skills.
  • Proficiency in 3-D CAD Modeling [ie SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo].
  • Proficiency in visualization/rendering software (ie KeyShot).
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (ie Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Hands-on prototyping experience (3D printing, foam/clay modeling, soft goods mockups).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in consumer products.
  • Experience integrated sensors, wearables, or smart clothing,
  • Experience with user research methods (contextual inquiry, ethnography, usability testing).
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes: injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, over-molding, mechanical assembly.
