What You Will Do
Are you a talented and driven engineer looking to develop, maintain, and apply a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions? Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as an Electrical Design Engineer. As a vital member of the ES-DO team you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, and will support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory. If you're eager to support the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission, this opportunity is for you!
Note: This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Electrical Design Engineer 2 ($106,400-$176,000)
As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will concurrently work on multiple design teams shaping LANL's facilities and infrastructure to serve the needs of a growing and changing Laboratory. Your teams will provide engineering consulting services typical of any or all project phases (scoping, design, construction, commissioning, operation). The level 3 role includes the following job duties:
Assessment & Analysis
  • Assess condition of existing facilities and infrastructure systems
  • Expertly apply engineering judgement to engineering challenges
  • Provide subject matter expert opinions
Design & Development
  • Develop design scopes
  • Estimate design efforts
  • Produce Construction Contract Documents
Documentation & Compliance
  • Generate written recommendations
  • Adhere to LANL's Engineering Standards, Conduct of Engineering, prevailing codes and standards
Coordination & Stakeholder Management
  • Interface and coordinate with project stakeholders
  • Foster timely coordination between all design disciplines
  • Ensure timely engagement of third-party resources such as Sustainability and Commissioning
Review & Quality Assurance
  • Provide reviews of outside A/E designs
  • Review construction submittals, provide RFI responses and generate Document revisions

Electrical Engineer Level 3 ($128,000 - $215,900)
In addition to duties listed above, the level 4 role includes the following responsibilities:
  • Make visionary organizational contributions regarding design and business practices
  • Contribute to improvement of LANL's Engineering Standards
  • Facilitate technical growth of the Electrical design team

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Design Expertise
  • Advanced experience in design and principle of operation in both Electrical and plumbing facility systems
  • Expert application of building codes, standards and green initiatives related to facilities design
Documentation & Deliverables
  • Advanced experience creating construction contract documents for commercial and/or industrial facilities
  • Ability to support construction execution, including timely review of submittals, requests for information, design changes, aid in non-conformance issues, validation of commissioning documentation and produce accurate as-built documents
Engineering Analysis & Problem-Solving
  • Expert ability in preparing calculations, application of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to facility and operations-based engineering challenges
  • Expert ability to apply engineering judgement to facility and operations-based engineering challenges
Project Management & Communication
  • Ability to manage, prioritize, and communicate workload and tasks
Additional Job Requirements for Electrical Design Engineer 3:
  • Expert knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to Electrical facilities engineering
  • Expert knowledge of engineering work planning, budgeting and design coordination
Education/Experience for Electrical Design Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.
Education/Experience for Electrical Design Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Current NCEES Professional Engineering License in Electrical Engineering (any US State)
  • Professional experience with DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures
  • Professional experience in design and principle of operation of infrastructure systems
  • National Code Committee participation

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
