Design Technologists are professionals who bridge the gap between design and technology by combining creative design skills with technical expertise. They work closely with designers and developers to prototype, test, and implement interactive digital products and experiences. Their role often involves coding, user experience (UX) design, and ensuring ideas are both visually appealing and technically feasible. Design Technologists play a crucial part in innovating and bringing creative concepts to life in digital environments.

How does a design technologist typically collaborate with UX designers and developers on project teams?

Design Technologists act as a bridge between design and engineering teams, translating creative concepts into interactive prototypes and functional components. They frequently participate in cross-disciplinary meetings, providing technical feedback to designers and ensuring that design ideas are feasible within the chosen technology stack. On a daily basis, they work closely with UX designers to iterate on user flows and interface elements, while also partnering with developers to ensure smooth handoffs and implementation. Job description

Principal Associate, Product Design - Design SystemsProduct Designer

(Principal Associate level - IC)

At Capital One, we're building a leading information-based technology company. Still founder-led by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard Fairbank, Capital One is on a mission to help our customers succeed by bringing ingenuity, simplicity, and humanity to banking. We measure our efforts by the success our customers enjoy and the advocacy they exhibit. We're succeeding because they're succeeding.

Guided by our shared values, we thrive in an environment where collaboration and openness are valued. We believe that innovation is powered by perspective and that teamwork and respect for each other lead to superior results. We elevate each other and obsess about doing the right thing. Our associates serve with humility and a deep respect for their responsibility in helping our customers achieve their goals and realize their dreams. Together, we're on a quest to change banking for good.

We are currently seeking a Product Designer to join our Card Servicing Experience design team. We design the experiences and tools that help our servicing associates help our customers, or help our customers help themselves. The work we do ensures customers can easily navigate any question or problem they have along their journey with us, no matter which path they follow.

This Product Designer will combine their craft expertise with an understanding of our customers and the business to co-create innovative solutions to complex problems. You will oversee work on our agent platform and its associated design system and governance processes - ensuring that when we expand our product feature set, we do so in a methodical, systematic way. We're looking for a designer who will take a systems-mindset to defining and deploying consistent, reusable componentry and patterns across our product portfolio. This designer gets excited by enabling fellow design and product partners with the documentation needed to leverage, contribute to, scale, and evolve our library.

Here are some of the expected competencies for this role:

Product Design Expertise: Leverage deep expertise in product design and skills across interaction, visual and service design to elevate the quality and maturity of the design practice at Capital One; in collaboration with cross-functional partners, use appropriate tools, platforms, frameworks and design systems and work with teams to create artifacts that may include journey maps, blueprints, high-fidelity designs and prototypes

Design System Expertise: Apply a deep understanding of Figma's advanced design system features to:

  • Expertly build and maintain robust, scalable components with nested instances, variants, text-properties, booleans, and interactive components

  • Document component tech specs and usage guidelines like dos, don'ts, accessibility guidance and usage examples

  • Create responsive components and documentation via auto layout, constraints, and interactive connections.

  • Effectively apply atomic design methodology to ensure proper level of inheritance throughout our design system

  • Efficiently organize and publish new versions of our design library and suite of documentation via branching controls with a risk-adverse mindset

  • Provide a single source of design truth by managing access and ensure version control

Human-Centered: Champion the customer through the design process, leveraging critical-thinking skills that factor in data, research insights, scalability, tech constraints and feedback

Business-Focused: Understand and apply business and customer strategy, facilitate design process activities with team and partners, negotiating customer needs and business goals for harmonious outcomes

Problem-Solving: Actively build an understanding of the potential of tech and data capabilities and emerging technologies and use this knowledge to inform work, identify new opportunities and help your team navigate technical limitations

Collaboration: Foster relationships with partners and continuously expand your network, listening to diverse points of view and collaborating with an informed perspective to influence outcomes, break down silos and gain alignment.

  • Collaborate with designers across various teams to validate new components and evolve existing ones

  • Partner, mentor and teach other designers who contribute to the design system.

  • Partner with Product Owners to prioritize roadmaps

  • Collaborate with our Tech team to ensure the Design and Tech libraries are in-sync.

  • Perform Quality Assurance (QA) on the technical build of design system components and documentation

Communication: Present work to audiences across levels and job functions using a human-centered approach that integrates design frameworks, data and research insights to effectively articulate insights and design decisions

  • Through governance, provide action-oriented guidance and approval for teams leveraging our design system

  • Share important announcements to the community regarding our design system and processes

The ideal candidate has a strong portfolio demonstrating their process, results, and impact.

Basic Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of experience in a Product Design role

  • At least 3 years of experience with design and prototyping tools, such as Figma

  • Experience leading a design system
