What is a design system manager?

A Design System Manager is a professional responsible for creating, maintaining, and evolving an organization's design system. This role ensures consistency in visual styles, components, and user experience across all digital products. Design System Managers collaborate with designers, developers, and product teams to implement best practices, document guidelines, and manage updates to the system. Their work helps streamline workflows, improve accessibility, and foster a cohesive brand identity.

How does a design system manager typically collaborate with product teams and developers?

A Design System Manager works closely with product teams, UX/UI designers, and developers to ensure consistency and efficiency across all digital products. They facilitate cross-functional communication by gathering feedback, aligning design standards with engineering requirements, and providing clear documentation. Regular sync meetings, design reviews, and collaborative workshops are common, allowing the manager to address challenges and promote adoption of the system. This collaboration helps streamline workflows, resolve discrepancies, and maintain a cohesive user experience across platforms.

This is a hybrid contract role requiring three days per week onsite in San Diego, San Francisco, or Mountain View.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Lead product design from ambiguous problems through validated, production-ready solutions.
  • Simplify complex enterprise workflows into intuitive, scalable experiences.
  • Design internal tools for customer onboarding, portfolio management, account health, reporting, and customer support.
  • Create reusable platform patterns and components that work across multiple products and use cases.

  • Facilitate workshops, design reviews, and roadmap discussions.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level designers.

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • 8+ years of experience in product design, interaction design, UX design, or a related field.
  • Experience designing complex enterprise software, SaaS products, platforms, or internal tools.
  • A portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design process, complex problem solving, and measurable product impact.
  • Strong interaction design, visual design, systems thinking, and prototyping skills.
  • Experience creating reusable patterns, components, or platform-level experiences.
  • Experience conducting or applying user research and usability testing.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Product and Engineering partners.
  • Experience designing or prototyping AI-assisted, conversational, or agentic product experiences.
  • Strong Figma and design-system experience.
  • Ability to work onsite three days per week in San Diego, San Francisco, or Mountain View.

Experience with Customer Success workflows, implementation or onboarding tools, Salesforce, and mid-market products is helpful but not required.
