Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The purpose of the Design Manager position is to manage design department at SFS location or district, including following SFS's quality design procedure and work instruction.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Strong working knowledge of fire sprinkler codes.  NICET III or NICET IV preferred.  Equivalent experience will be considered assuming individual pursues NICET education.     
  • Using SFS' Design Review Form, reviews and verifies designs and calculations prior to submittal.  
  • Assigns projects to designers based on workload demand and maintains design calendar.  
  • Ensures that field checks are completed and that projects are listed for material accurately and on time.  
  • Participate in design kick off, WPR meetings.
  • In conjunction with the SFS technology manager, maintaining design systems and software.
  • Helps coordinate material delivery to job sites.
  • Assist sales / estimating personnel in estimating design hours for bids.
  • Assist design personnel in preparation for NICET tests and correspondence courses. 
  • Train designers and design trainees all applicable aspects of fire protection design. 
  • Maintain design department supplies.
  • As required, design automatic sprinkler systems including fire pumps, tanks, wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge systems using working knowledge of fire sprinkler codes.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner. 
  • Review all design employees per company policy.  
  • Understand and follow SFS' Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous communication program, policies and procedures.  Employee must know where all related safety documentation is at all times on each project. 
  • Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The qualifications listed below are representative of the elements required to perform the job successfully, however in some cases, an equivalent combination of Education, Training, Certifications and Experience may meet the job qualifications.

Education, Training, Certifications:

  • HS Diploma or equivalent required. 
  • NICET II or NICET III and/or state required certification required.

Experience, Knowledge, Skill Requirements:

  • 10 years' experience as sprinkler designer, required.  
  • Construction experience, preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude, preferred.
  • Basic and advanced math skills, required.

Communication Skills:

  • Must have the ability to effectively read, write and communicate in English with employees and customers.

Systems and Software Skills:

  • Ability to operate a computer, use Microsoft Office required.
  • Familiarity with HydraCad and/or other CAD software, preferred.

Other Qualifications:

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required. 
  • Must be able to comply with SFS's Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, which may also include customer specific requirements based on contractual agreement.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods. Employee will occasionally be required to bend, kneel, balance, lift <20lb, walk, stand, ascend/descend stairs, drive, twist, and reach above and below shoulders.  Employee will frequently be required to drive and walk for periods.

Work Environment:

Employee will consistently be required to work indoors in an office setting, work alone and with other.   Employees will occasionally be required to work outside, and be exposed to hot/cold temperatures, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical hazards and noise.  Employee will be occasionally required to wear all appropriate personal protective equipment, as required by company safety policies while visiting locations.
