Design Research Assistant information

What is a design research assistant?

Design Research Assistants are professionals who support design teams by conducting research to inform and guide the design process. Their responsibilities typically include gathering user insights, analyzing data, assisting in usability testing, and preparing reports that help designers create user-centered products or experiences. They often use both qualitative and quantitative research methods and work closely with designers, researchers, and other stakeholders. This role is essential for ensuring that design solutions are based on real user needs and evidence.

How does a design research assistant typically contribute to collaborative projects within a design team?

As a Design Research Assistant, you play a vital role in supporting collaborative projects by gathering user insights, conducting surveys or interviews, and synthesizing findings for the design team. You often work closely with UX/UI designers, product managers, and other researchers to ensure that user perspectives are integrated into the design process. Your ability to communicate research findings clearly and contribute to brainstorming sessions helps drive informed design decisions and fosters a user-centered approach throughout the project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design research assistant, and why are they important?

A Design Research Assistant should have a solid background in user research methods, data analysis, and design principles, often supported by a degree in design, psychology, or a related field. Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research tools, survey platforms, and design software like Adobe Creative Suite or Figma is typically required. Strong communication, organization, and critical thinking skills help them effectively collaborate and synthesize insights. These abilities are crucial for delivering actionable research that informs and improves design solutions.

What is the difference between Design Research Assistant vs User Experience Researcher?

Responsibilities

The Mayo Clinic Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery is seeking a successful Health Services Researcher to join the team! The position can be located at any of Mayo Clinic’s campuses in Rochester, Minnesota; Phoenix, Arizona; or Jacksonville, Florida.

For more than 150 years, Mayo Clinic has relentlessly pursued solutions to problems in healthcare, seeking continuous improvements in health and healthcare delivery. Our ability to meet this goal stems from the research we conduct — in close alignment with our medical practice — to address patients' unmet needs.

As the only research center fully embedded in the medical practice, the Mayo Clinic Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery is uniquely positioned to advance Mayo Clinic's history of taking a scientific approach to healthcare delivery. In the center, we create and evaluate data-driven solutions that transform the healthcare experience. Our research drives the continuous improvement essential for a learning health system to safely and reliably provide evidence-based, high-quality care.

From discovery to implementation

In the Mayo Clinic Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery, every project is inspired by real-world challenges experienced by Mayo's patients and healthcare professionals. And every solution is designed and tested with an eye to future value.

Capabilities of unique depth and breadth

Bound by a shared dedication to transforming healthcare, the Kern Center's faculty and staff bring unparalleled expertise to every challenge. Our team science approach — a hallmark of Mayo Clinic research — leads to higher value care for Mayo's patients and communities everywhere.

  • Artificial intelligence, information technology and human-computer interaction.
  • Clinical outcomes evaluation and comparative effectiveness research.
  • Economics, cost analysis and healthcare policy.
  • Ergonomics, human factors and human-centered design.
  • Health services research.
  • Industrial, systems and management engineering.
  • Knowledge synthesis.
  • Qualitative research.
  • Statistical modeling, machine learning and data analysis.
  • Study design and pragmatic trials.
  • Social and behavioral sciences.

Clinical areas that work with the Kern Center leverage our deep knowledge and singular focus to expedite discovery and enhance implementation. Our team supports and leads investigations across Mayo Clinic. For example:

  • Some of our team members spend time designing ways to analyze and present vast amounts of de‑identified clinical and administrative data to help clinicians and nurses provide up‑to‑date, individualized care.
  • Other center researchers analyze mental and physical workloads, ergonomics, and potential interventions to ensure that surgeons and surgical team members are safe and healthy. This allows the teams to continue to provide the high‑quality surgical care expected at Mayo Clinic.
  • We also collaborate to develop, assess and implement new methods of care delivery — such as telehealth specialty care for children with sickle cell disease and virtual nurse care team members — to reduce healthcare disparities and lead to better patient outcomes.

Center faculty and staff share an unwavering commitment to supporting Mayo Clinic's medical practice. We aim to create and sustain a high‑quality, affordable, seamless patient experience, provided by a healthy and happy workforce.

Qualifications

This position is fully funded by the institution and, as such, the selected candidate will be expected to respond to current needs of the clinical practice.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD, or MD/PhD (or equivalent) in Health Services Research or areas related to quantitative analysis of health data. They should demonstrate expertise in informing and evaluating health care interventions using retrospective study designs, including analyses of electronic health records, administrative claims data, pragmatic clinical trials, and comparative effectiveness research. While candidates at all career stages (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor) are welcome to apply, a strong methodological foundation in causal inference and outcomes research, as well as a track record of impactful health services research and team science are essential.
