What Is a Design Project Manager?

Design project managers oversee one or a group of creative projects for a client. They are often found working on interior design efforts and online web design projects. As a design project manager, your job duties include establishing the project schedule, monitoring the budget, and motivating a team of creative professionals. The qualifications to pursue a career as a design project manager include a bachelor’s degree in art, graphic design, or business management and several years of industry experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Project Manager, you need expertise in project management methodologies, design principles, and a relevant degree, often paired with experience in design or architecture fields. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Asana, Trello, or MS Project), design software (like Adobe Creative Suite), and certifications such as PMP or Agile are often required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help manage teams, stakeholders, and project challenges effectively. These competencies ensure projects are delivered on time, meet quality standards, and align with client or organizational goals.

How does a Design Project Manager typically coordinate collaboration between design teams and other departments?

A Design Project Manager acts as a central point of communication, ensuring that design teams work closely with stakeholders such as marketing, engineering, and product management. They regularly hold meetings to align project goals, clarify requirements, and address any roadblocks, fostering a collaborative environment. By managing timelines and expectations across departments, they help ensure that design deliverables integrate seamlessly with larger organizational objectives. This role often requires balancing creative vision with practical constraints from other teams, making strong communication and negotiation skills essential.

What does a Design Project Manager do?

A Design Project Manager oversees and coordinates the planning, execution, and completion of design projects. They act as a bridge between clients, designers, and other stakeholders to ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet the desired quality standards. Their responsibilities include creating project timelines, managing resources, resolving issues, and communicating progress to all parties involved. Design Project Managers often work in industries such as architecture, graphic design, interior design, or product development.

Salary: $80,000$90,000 DOE

Project Manager

Full-Time | In-Person | Scottsdale, AZ
Travel Required
Compensation: $80,000$90,000 DOE

About JAQUE

JAQUE is a luxury design firm specializing in high-end residential, hospitality, retail, and commercial environments across Arizona and select markets nationwide, including California, Florida, and Montana.

Projects range from luxury residential renovations to hospitality, retail, and commercial interior environments with a strong focus on execution, technical coordination, and elevated client experience.

Our company operates in a fast-moving, highly collaborative, founder-led environment where communication, urgency, organization, adaptability, and execution all matter equally.

We are seeking a highly organized, proactive, and solutions-oriented Project Manager to help drive project coordination, communication, accountability, and operational execution across multiple active projects.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys managing moving pieces, solving problems quickly, maintaining structure in dynamic environments, and helping keep projects, teams, vendors, and timelines aligned.

Role Overview

The Project Manager serves as the operational glue between leadership, design, technical teams, vendors, consultants, contractors, procurement, and installations.

This role is responsible for helping maintain organization, communication, accountability, scheduling, coordination, and steady project momentum across all phases of project execution.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, calm under pressure, proactive, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple active projects simultaneously without losing attention to detail.

This is not a passive administrative role. We are looking for someone who takes ownership, follows through relentlessly, communicates proactively, and helps maintain structure within a fast-moving project environment.

Travel is required based on project needs, installations, client meetings, and onsite coordination.

Who Youll Support

  • Founder & Leadership
  • Design Team
  • Architect of Record & Technical Team
  • Procurement & Operations Teams
  • Vendors, Consultants, & Contractors
  • Clients & Installation Teams

Core Responsibilities

Project Coordination & Execution

  • Oversee day-to-day coordination across multiple active projects
  • Help maintain project momentum, accountability, and follow-through
  • Track deadlines, deliverables, approvals, revisions, and outstanding items
  • Coordinate communication between internal teams, consultants, vendors, and contractors
  • Assist in identifying bottlenecks, missing information, or project risks proactively
  • Help ensure projects remain organized, aligned, and moving efficiently

Scheduling, Communication & Organization

  • Maintain project schedules, task tracking, and workflow coordination
  • Organize meetings, agendas, notes, action items, and follow-up communication
  • Ensure leadership and project teams remain informed and aligned
  • Maintain organized project files, documentation, and communication records
  • Support coordination across design, drafting, procurement, and installation workflows

Vendor, Consultant & Site Coordination

  • Coordinate with vendors, fabricators, consultants, contractors, and installers
  • Assist with ordering coordination, logistics, scheduling, and delivery tracking
  • Support onsite coordination for installations, meetings, and project execution
  • Travel as needed for project meetings, installations, site visits, and coordination

Operational Support & Problem Solving

  • Help create structure and consistency across active projects
  • Adapt quickly to changing priorities, schedules, and project needs
  • Support leadership in maintaining organization and operational flow
  • Help solve problems quickly, calmly, and professionally as challenges arise

What This Role Is Not

To ensure clarity, this role does not solely own:

  • Interior design direction or final creative approvals
  • Architectural liability or technical sign-off responsibilities
  • Procurement-only responsibilities
  • Executive assistant or purely administrative functions

This role works collaboratively across leadership, design, architecture, procurement, and operations to support overall project execution and coordination.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate:

  • Is highly organized and execution-focused
  • Communicates clearly, confidently, and professionally
  • Can manage multiple moving priorities simultaneously
  • Remains calm and solutions-oriented under pressure
  • Enjoys coordination, accountability, and operational problem-solving
  • Takes ownership and follows through consistently
  • Anticipates issues before they become larger problems
  • Is adaptable, proactive, and dependable
  • Thrives within collaborative, fast-moving project environments

This Role May Not Be The Right Fit For Someone Who

  • Requires constant direction or supervision
  • Struggles with organization, urgency, or follow-through
  • Becomes overwhelmed by changing priorities or fast-moving environments
  • Prefers slow-paced or highly siloed corporate environments
  • Dislikes communication, coordination, or accountability-heavy roles

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in project management, operations coordination, construction coordination, interior design project management, or related roles preferred
  • Experience within luxury residential, hospitality, retail, commercial, construction, or design industries preferred
  • Strong organizational and communication skills required
  • Ability to manage multiple active projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Experience coordinating vendors, consultants, contractors, and installations preferred
  • Proficiency with project management tools, spreadsheets, calendars, and communication platforms
  • Willingness to travel regularly based on project needs
  • Ability to maintain professionalism within high-pressure situations

Compensation & Structure

  • Full-time, in-person position
  • Travel required based on project and installation needs
  • Competitive compensation based on experience
  • Opportunity to work on a diverse range of luxury projects
  • Collaborative and creative work environment
  • Long-term growth opportunity within an expanding firm

To Apply

Please submit:

  • Resume
  • Relevant project management or coordination experience
  • Portfolio or project examples (if applicable)
  • Software/platform experience
