What is a design manager?

Design Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the design process within a project or organization. They coordinate and lead design teams, ensure design objectives align with business goals, and manage timelines, budgets, and resources. Design Managers often act as a bridge between creative teams and other departments, facilitating communication and ensuring that the final product meets both aesthetic and functional requirements. Their role can span across industries such as architecture, graphic design, product design, and digital media.

What does a design manager do?

A design manager oversees a design team during a project and typically works in the construction and architecture industries. As a design manager, you may work for specialty companies that contract out to construction firms on a per-project basis. Or, you may spend your career working as an in-house design manager for a construction company or architect firm. Regardless of the location of your job as a design manager, your duties revolve around supervising the design of a building project and include adhering to legislation and codes, eliminating safety and financial risks, and advising clients during development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design manager?

To thrive as a Design Manager, you need a strong background in design principles, project management, and leadership, typically supported by a degree in design or a related field and several years of design experience. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and project management tools like Asana or Trello is essential. Exceptional communication, team leadership, and problem-solving skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively leading creative teams, delivering high-quality design outcomes, and meeting client or organizational goals.

How does a design manager typically balance creative vision with project deadlines and client expectations?

A Design Manager is responsible for guiding their team's creative direction while ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget. This often means carefully prioritizing tasks, setting clear milestones, and communicating regularly with clients and stakeholders to manage expectations. They serve as a bridge between creative teams and project managers, helping to resolve conflicts and maintain a productive workflow. By fostering open collaboration and providing constructive feedback, Design Managers help ensure both the creative vision and practical project requirements are met.

Job description

SENIOR INTERIOR DESIGNER / PROJECT MANAGER

Location:
Abbotsford, BC
Type: Permanent, Full-Time, 1 Day WFH Flexibility
Salary: $85,000-$100,000 base salary plus bonus opportunities and comprehensive benefits
ABOUT OUR CLIENT
Our recruitment team is partnering exclusively and confidentially with a highly respected, well-established, design-forward, luxury residential design firm to identify an exceptional Senior Interior Designer / Project Manager.
THE IMPACT YOU WILL MAKE
As our Client's Senior Interior Designer / Project Manager, you are in service of both the client’s vision and the team bringing it to life. You’ll lead high-end residential interior design projects from concept through installation — on time, on budget, and to the standard our clients expect — translating each client’s wish list into interiors that are beautiful, functional, and deeply livable. You’ll guide clients with confidence, mentor our designers, and partner closely with our building design and construction teams to keep every project moving forward.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
In Service of the Client
  • Build trusted relationships by listening closely and translating each client’s vision into a home that reflects how they actually live.
  • Lead multiple high-end residential interior design projects at once, from concept through installation, balancing creative ambition with what’s practical to build and budget.
  • Run project coordination meetings and hold clients, consultants, contractors, and vendors accountable to the plan.
  • Spot risks to schedule, budget, scope, or the client experience early, and resolve them before they reach the client.
In Service of the Budget
  • Manage project budgets, fee allocations, forecasting, and profitability.
  • Catch financial variances before they affect the bottom line.
  • Support proposals, fee agreements, change orders, and client budget conversations.
In Service of the Team
  • Mentor and lead junior and intermediate designers and drafting technicians on day-to-day project work, delegating tasks with clear accountability. This is project-based leadership role. Our Interior Design Manager will perform hiring, discipline, and formal performance reviews.
  • Review deliverables for quality, consistency, and technical accuracy.
  • Help build a culture of collaboration, ownership, and continuous learning.
In Service of the Design
  • Lead the creative vision for bespoke residential interiors — concepts, mood boards, material palettes, furniture plans, finishes, lighting, and specifications.
  • Evolve our Client's pre-designed interior packages, extending their firm's standard to a broader audience.
  • Make sure design intent holds through procurement, construction, and installation.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
  • Prefer 10+ years of residential interior design experience, with real project leadership responsibility.
  • Demonstrated track record of managing budgets, schedules, profitability, and client expectations together, not in isolation.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and coordinating consultants and contractors.
  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Revit and related industry software.
  • Solid knowledge of construction, building codes and bylaws, documentation standards, and project delivery.
WHY YOU WILL LOVE IT HERE
  • Work on high-profile custom residential projects that are personal, detailed, and built to last.
  • Join a values-driven team — they are team players, they pursue excellence, and they have a growth mindset — with a real sense of purpose.
  • Take a meaningful leadership role in shaping projects, client experiences, and the people around you.
  • Learn and grow with real investment in your development, plus profit sharing in the firm's success.
  • Work face-to-face in a creative, collaborative office, with competitive pay, bonus opportunities, and comprehensive health and dental benefits.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

You’re a trusted project leader who consistently delivers exceptional residential interiors — on time, on budget, and profitably — while clients feel heard, supported, and delighted with the result. Your leadership raises the bar for the team and strengthens the client experience across every project you touch.
