Design Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the design process within a project or organization. They coordinate and lead design teams, ensure design objectives align with business goals, and manage timelines, budgets, and resources. Design Managers often act as a bridge between creative teams and other departments, facilitating communication and ensuring that the final product meets both aesthetic and functional requirements. Their role can span across industries such as architecture, graphic design, product design, and digital media.

What does a design manager do?

A design manager oversees a design team during a project and typically works in the construction and architecture industries. As a design manager, you may work for specialty companies that contract out to construction firms on a per-project basis. Or, you may spend your career working as an in-house design manager for a construction company or architect firm. Regardless of the location of your job as a design manager, your duties revolve around supervising the design of a building project and include adhering to legislation and codes, eliminating safety and financial risks, and advising clients during development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design manager?

To thrive as a Design Manager, you need a strong background in design principles, project management, and leadership, typically supported by a degree in design or a related field and several years of design experience. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and project management tools like Asana or Trello is essential. Exceptional communication, team leadership, and problem-solving skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively leading creative teams, delivering high-quality design outcomes, and meeting client or organizational goals.

How does a design manager typically balance creative vision with project deadlines and client expectations?

This often means carefully prioritizing tasks, setting clear milestones, and communicating regularly with clients and stakeholders to manage expectations. Job description

Job Title: In-House Design Manager

Location: York, PA

Schedule: Monday-Friday

Our Story:

Founded in 2012 by brothers John and Jeff Inch, Inch & Co. has grown from a small local builder into an award-winning family of companies — earning recognition as one of Central Pennsylvania's fastest-growing companies by the Central Penn Business Journal in 2022. Headquartered in York, Pennsylvania, we take an integrated approach to real estate — spanning land development, design, construction, management, and long-term investment — so that quality and purpose are built into every detail.

Where You’ll Fit

The In-House Design Manager is responsible for coordinating and managing all civil, architectural and design efforts for the company’s multifamily development and commercial construction projects. This role oversees design from early concept through construction documents, working closely with internal teams and external consultants to ensure plans are coordinated, buildable, and aligned with project goals.

While the candidate for this position does not hold an architectural seal, the Design Manager plays a critical role in managing the full design process, coordinating civil and architectural efforts, and serving as the primary internal point of contact for design-related matters.

In addition, this role may assist with select third-party projects by performing initial architectural evaluations for renovations, repositioning, or feasibility studies as capacity allows.

What You’ll Build:

Architectural Design Coordination

  • Manage architectural design efforts for multifamily projects from concept through construction documents
  • Coordinate with external licensed architects for sealed drawings and compliance
  • Review plans for constructibility, consistency, and alignment with project budgets and schedules
  • Lead internal design reviews and coordinate revisions
  • Serve as the primary design liaison between development, construction, preconstruction, and consultants

Civil & Consultant Coordination

  • Coordinate civil engineering efforts in conjunction with architectural design
  • Ensure alignment between site, civil, and building plans
  • Track design milestones, deliverables, and consultant timelines
  • Identify and resolve coordination issues early to avoid downstream conflicts

Development & Construction Support

  • Support pre-construction with design clarification and coordination during estimating
  • Assist construction teams with plan interpretation and design-related questions
  • Help manage design changes and revisions throughout construction
  • Participate in meetings related to design, permitting, and project planning

Third-Party & Special Projects (as capacity allows)

  • Perform initial architectural evaluations for renovation, repositioning, or feasibility studies
  • Review existing plans and conditions for third-party or internal assessment work
  • Provide high-level design input and recommendations

Qualifications

  • Professional experience in architectural design, design management, or project coordination
  • Experience with multifamily projects strongly preferred
  • Licensure not required; experience coordinating with licensed architects is essential
  • Strong understanding of construction documents, plan reading, and design coordination
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Clear communicator who can bridge design, development, and construction teams

Software & Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in architectural design software (AutoCAD, Revit, or similar)
  • Ability to review and markup drawings
  • Familiarity with coordination tools and document management platforms
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills

Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match of 4%
  • Paid time off and paid company holidays
