What is a design engineer?

Design engineers develop ideas for new products and determine ways to improve existing products. As a design engineer, you put a creative perspective on your technical engineering knowledge to perform your job duties, which include creating sketches of design ideas and using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to generate plans for prototypes. To ensure the product is viable, you also evaluate other aspects of the product design, such as safety, cost, sustainability, aesthetics, and user experience. You collaborate with a team of technicians and other engineers to run tests, troubleshoot problems, and ultimately produce a newly designed product.

What does a design engineer do?

A Design Engineer is responsible for creating and developing new products, systems, or structures by combining engineering principles with creative design. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce detailed drawings and specifications, working closely with other engineers and teams to ensure functionality, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Design Engineers are involved in every stage of product development, from initial concept through prototyping, testing, and final production. Their work often requires problem-solving skills, technical knowledge, and the ability to communicate ideas clearly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, CAD software proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and simulation software, along with certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE), are commonly required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating ideas into workable designs. These abilities ensure innovative, efficient, and manufacturable solutions that meet both technical and client requirements.

How does a design engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Design Engineers regularly work alongside teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and product management to ensure that designs are both innovative and feasible for production. Collaboration often involves participating in cross-functional meetings, reviewing prototypes, and incorporating feedback from various stakeholders. This teamwork is essential to address technical and practical challenges early in the design process, which ultimately helps in delivering a successful product to market. Strong communication and adaptability are key skills for thriving in this collaborative environment.

What is the difference between Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectDesign EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Design certifications often preferredBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license optional
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD software, project planningManufacturing plants, labs, fieldwork, CAD and testing
Employer & Industry UsageProduct design firms, automotive, aerospace, consumer goodsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy sectors

Design Engineers focus on creating and developing product designs using CAD tools, while Mechanical Engineers often work on the broader application, testing, and manufacturing of mechanical systems. Both roles require engineering degrees, but Design Engineers typically emphasize design skills and software proficiency, whereas Mechanical Engineers may engage more in analysis and system integration.

What jobs can a design engineer do?

A design engineer creates and develops new products, systems, or structures across industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and manufacturing. They use CAD software, perform simulations, and collaborate with teams to ensure functionality and safety. Design engineers often work in research and development, product design, or process improvement roles.

New Millennium is committed to hiring enthusiastic, dedicated, hardworking, team-oriented individuals who are willing to learn and enjoy working in a challenging, fast paced, dynamic environment regardless of your experience level. We are excited to train the right team members and will provide what you need to enable you to succeed.
New Millennium offers flexible hours, competitive pay, paid vacations up to 4 weeks per year based on length of service, quarterly bonuses, annual profit sharing, annual stock awards, 401k with up to 50% matching, dependent scholarships, employee education assistance, full medical, dental and vision insurance and more. In addition to that, our culture and work environment is very collaborative, highly technical, and extremely rewarding.
New Millennium is part of Steel Dynamics, Inc., one of the largest steel producers in the country with locations throughout the US. As such, we also offer countless opportunities for advancement throughout all divisions of SDI. A New Millennium trained detailer is a high-value candidate for advancement and relocation due to their in-depth knowledge of a wide range of our daily operations.
Responsibilities
As a Detailer for New Millennium, you will:
  • Review structural contract drawings and specifications for non-residential building projects.
  • Interpret the loading diagrams (uplift, snow drift, ponding, etc.) with the assistance of our internal Project Managers and Engineers and apply those load requirements to the steel joists and girders.
  • Analyze connections of steel joists and girders to the supporting members (beams, columns, walls, etc.)
  • Identify special connections that may be required.
  • Coordinate with other trades including structural steel fabricators, precast suppliers, fire protection, HVAC designers, athletic equipment suppliers (basketball goals, etc.) to incorporate the needs of those trades into the joist/girder designs.
  • Identify and apply special joist and girder profile properties (single/double pitch, bowstring/barrel, etc.)
  • Create Joist/Girder/Deck placement plans, sections, and details to reflect New Millennium's interpretation of the contract drawings for the Structural Engineer of Record to review/approve and for the ironworkers who will be erecting the structure, so they know where to install and how to attach our materials in the building.
  • Create Bills of Material for all joists, girders and deck that import into our design program, which then designs and generates shop orders for all joists, girders, deck, bridging, etc.
  • Coordinate with our customers, erectors, GC's and Architect/Engineer of Record to ensure that our products are designed, fabricated, and delivered to the jobsite with the highest quality and on schedule.
  • Other duties as necessary

Qualifications
An ideal candidate would have experience in one or more of the following:
  • Joist/girder/deck or structural steel detailing
  • Structural design/drafting/modelling
  • Working on projects from concept to production
  • Problem solving or quality assurance
  • 2D or 3D cad software
  • Education in civil or mechanical engineering, construction management, design engineering, architectural engineering, etc.
  • Reading and interpreting drawings, sections, specifications and other construction related documents

Steel Dynamics, Inc., and all affiliated entities are equal opportunity employers.

About Steel Dynamics

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Steel Dynamics is one of the largest and most diversified domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in the United States, with an estimated steelmaking and coating capacity of approximately 13 million tons, and facilities located throughout the United States and in Mexico. We operate using a circular manufacturing model, producing lower-carbon-emission, quality steel using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology with recycled ferrous scrap as the primary input. Our circular economy is powered by our three primary operating platforms: steel, metals recycling, and steel fabrication. Our steel operations produce steel products, including hot roll, cold roll, and coated sheet steel, structural steel beams and shapes, rail, engineered special-bar-quality steel, cold finished steel, merchant bar products, and specialty steel sections. Our metals recycling operations collect and process ferrous and nonferrous scrap from manufacturing and end-of-life items, such as automobiles, appliances, and machinery. This processed scrap is then sold to end-users for reuse, including our EAF steel mills, which produce new steel from the scrapped material. We sell a meaningful amount of steel to our own steel fabrication operations that in turn produce and sell structural steel joist and deck building systems to consumers.
