Job description

The Creighton University Retreat Center in Griswold, IA is seeking a highly skilled and self-directed Facilities & Maintenance Engineer to ensure the year-round operation, safety, and reliability of our scenic retreat property. This is a full-time, hands-on, multi-trade role ideal for someone who enjoys both technical systems work and outdoor property stewardship.

This position is responsible for advanced-level maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair across electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical systems, while also supporting groundskeeping, trail maintenance, and seasonal property needs. You'll play a critical role in maintaining a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for all guests and staff.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities Systems Maintenance & Repair

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems including lighting, controls, ballasts, and LED retrofits
  • Identify and resolve issues with circuitry, pumps, motors, motor controls, and commercial equipment
  • Install and wire new equipment, including motors, pumps, and temporary power setups
  • Maintain and service backup generators and emergency power systems

Plumbing & Water Systems

  • Repair and replace piping, fixtures, drain lines, and water systems
  • Maintain water softeners, regulators, and domestic water systems
  • Operate manual and electric drain cleaning equipment

HVAC & Mechanical Systems

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on heating, cooling, and ventilation systems
  • Work with boilers, chillers, steam systems, radiators, and heat exchangers
  • Troubleshoot compressors, pneumatics, air handlers, and fan coil units

Commercial Kitchen Equipment

  • Diagnose and repair kitchen appliances including ovens, fryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, and ice machines
  • Maintain both gas and electric kitchen systems

Grounds & Property Maintenance

  • Perform lawn care, mowing, landscaping, and erosion control
  • Maintain trails and wooded areas, including clearing downed trees
  • Handle seasonal duties such as snow removal

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Some level of post-secondary education preferred (ie technical / trade school, college or university studies)
  • Minimum of 5 + years of building maintenance experience in a Commercial setting with a strong knowledge of HVAC equipment, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Must have a current and valid driver's license with a clean driving record for the last 3 years and no major violations within the last 5 years
  • Formal training in HVAC, plumbing, and/or electrical systems is preferred.
  • Familiarity with lawn care, tree removal, landscaping, soil erosion, and country road care and repair.
  • Trade Journeyman, 3rd Grade Engineers License and/ or back flow certifications desired.

Skills

  • Experience troubleshooting, maintaining, and upgrading lighting systems, including LED retrofits from fluorescent, metal halide, and HPS.
  • Working knowledge of 208/120V and 480/277V three-phase electrical systems and understanding of electrical safety standards and procedures.
  • Experience operating manual and electric drain cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of steam and condensate systems, including troubleshooting and preventative maintenance of PRVs, steam traps, controls, condensate pumps, and strainers.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing HVAC and mechanical systems, including refrigerant, hot water, chilled water, steam systems, boilers, chillers, radiators, and heat exchangers
  • Ability to diagnose and repair pneumatics, compressors, pumps, motors, air handlers, fan coil units, and exhaust systems
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing commercial and residential kitchen equipment, including refrigerators, ovens, fryers, dishwashers, ice machines, and water systems
  • Experience operating grounds equipment, including riding mowers and tractors for snow removal
