What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design development manager?

To thrive as a Design Development Manager, you need expertise in architectural or product design, project management, and a relevant degree (such as architecture, engineering, or industrial design). Familiarity with CAD software, BIM systems, and project management tools like AutoCAD, Revit, or Asana is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set outstanding candidates apart in this role. These skills are vital for effectively leading design teams, ensuring project deliverables meet quality standards, and aligning creative solutions with business objectives.

How does a design development manager typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

A Design Development Manager frequently works cross-functionally, coordinating with architects, engineers, procurement, and construction teams to ensure that design intent is maintained throughout the project lifecycle. They facilitate communication between creative and technical stakeholders, translating design concepts into actionable plans while addressing technical constraints and client needs. Effective collaboration is key to resolving design challenges, staying on schedule, and delivering high-quality outcomes that align with project goals.

Is a design development manager a stressful job?

A design development manager often faces stress related to project deadlines, managing cross-functional teams, and ensuring design quality. The role requires strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities, which can contribute to a high-stress environment, especially during critical project phases.

Job Overview

Step into a Mechanical Engineer, Design Development role with Ingersoll Rand’s Bentleyville, Pennsylvania site—a key North American engineering and packaging hub for Nash and MD Kinney liquid-ring vacuum pumps and compressors. The team supports a broad portfolio of rotating-equipment designs, global manufacturing, and U.S. service operations, with responsibility spanning product engineering, design support, packaging, and lifecycle support.

In this role, you’ll take meaningful ownership of complex rotating equipment within two established, market-leading product brands. You will support the design, development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of commercial liquid-ring vacuum pumps and compressors, including engineering changes, product data and documentation, manufacturing support, and technical collaboration with Quality, Operations, Service, Sales, and Product Management. You’ll contribute to both current product support and new product development, helping improve performance, reduce cost without compromising reliability, expand CFD capability, and advance proven technology into its next generation. Whether you’re early in your engineering career and ready for greater development ownership, or you’ve taken a broader path into mechanical/product design, this role offers room to grow your technical depth and impact.

What makes you an instant-yes candidate? You take ownership, work independently, stay organized, communicate effectively across teams, and keep projects moving with the right priorities and attention to detail. Technically, you bring a strong mechanical foundation and an interest in understanding the mechanics, assembly, and operation of rotating equipment. You can perform engineering calculations and analysis and are proficient in 3D CAD. Experience with FEA/CFD, vibration, fluid dynamics, troubleshooting, ERP/BOM ownership, or Ansys adds value. Direct Nash or MD Kinney experience is not required—a strong mechanical design and problem-solving foundation, combined with the ability to quickly develop deeper analytical skills, can be equally valuable.

Bring your mechanical design development expertise, curiosity, and ownership mindset—and help take proven Nash and MD Kinney technology into its next generation.

Responsibilities
  • Support commercial liquid-ring vacuum pump and compressor product lines through product engineering, design improvements, performance evaluation, manufacturing support, and documentation.
  • Develop and maintain strong product knowledge across assigned configurations, components, applications, engineering data, and legacy/current platforms.
  • Execute product design and development activities from concept and design review through prototype support, validation, implementation, and release.
  • Improve product designs to enhance performance, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, drawings, specifications, design layouts, bills of material, and supporting engineering records.
  • Prepare and implement ECRs, ECNs, drawing revisions, BOM updates, and product data changes, maintaining accurate engineering change histories.
  • Analyze test results, product performance, manufacturing feedback, field service data, and quality concerns to drive troubleshooting, corrective actions, and design improvements.
  • Partner with Manufacturing, Quality, Operations, Sourcing, Customer Service, Field Service, Sales, and Product Management, while managing multiple priorities and supporting authorized government, defense, or export-controlled projects as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of progressive experience in rotating equipment design, mechanical product design, industrial equipment design, or manufacturing engineering.
  • 2+ years experience maintaining engineering data within an ERP system, such as SAP.
  • 2+ years working knowledge of manufacturing processes to include machining, casting, fabrication, assembly, and rotating equipment design principles.
  • 1+ year of experience using 3D CAD software, ideally Autodesk Inventor.
Core Competencies
  • Ownership & Accountability – Takes responsibility for assigned products, including design integrity, documentation accuracy, product performance, and continuous improvement.
  • Analytical Problem Solving – Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate technical issues, interpret data, and apply sound engineering judgment.
  • Mechanical Engineering Judgment – Applies sound mechanical engineering principles to balance performance, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making – Uses engineering analysis, testing, manufacturing feedback, and field performance data to guide decisions and improvements.
  • Attention to Detail – Maintains accuracy across engineering documentation, bills of material, technical records, and change management.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration – Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with engineering, manufacturing, quality, service, sourcing, and other stakeholders.
Preferences
  • Experience with vacuum pumps, compressors, liquid ring equipment, or other rotating fluid machinery.
  • Experience applying mechanical products to customer operating conditions, performance requirements, or industrial process applications.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, including ANSYS and/or Simerics MP+.
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools; Windchill preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and compressible flow principles.
  • Experience with vibration analysis and/or acoustic analysis.
Travel & Work Arrangements
  • On-site position based in Bentleyville, PA.
  • Must hold US Citizenship due to assigned government engineering activies
  • Occasional travel may be required to support customers, suppliers, manufacturing facilities, or project activities.
