Job Description:

Overview: The Highway Engineer In Training (also known as Project Designer or Engineering Associate) in the Highways and Freeways group will play a valuable role in advancing the growth of our Transportation Engineering practice for the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO). This highway design position will provide an opportunity to learn and apply MTO standards, policies, and practices. You will collaborate as part of a team of Highway Engineers and Design Specialists, and work on a variety of multidisciplinary and low to high-complexity transportation projects, including rehabilitation, replacement, widening and/or expansion of highways and freeways. This fantastic opportunity is for someone who values teamwork, quality and trust, and will foster growth within the group and the company.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design Highway Engineering components under a professional engineer's supervision on MTO transportation projects across Ontario, from planning to execution, ensuring all milestones and goals are met.
  • Highway Engineering design development on a variety of projects, including functional studies, preliminary design and detail design.
  • Coordinate with project teams, including engineers and designers.
  • Proactively manage risks, identifying potential issues early and working to develop solutions that minimize delays and cost overruns.
  • As a Highway EIT on MTO projects, you will contribute to the successful completion of field investigations, geometric design, grading design, roadside safety design, drainage design, storm sewer design, pavement marking and signage design, complex construction staging design, traffic management, roadway modelling, quantity estimating, utility coordination, contract drawing preparation, contract document preparation, construction cost estimate development, and construction liaison.
  • Integrate MTO active transportation plans and standards into the design.
  • Prepare technical reports and documentation for clients, ensuring technical excellence and quality assurance of project tasks and deliverables.
  • Assist in business development activities, including proposal preparation, project methodology development, work programs, schedules, and budgets.

Requirements:

  • University degree in Civil/Transportation Engineering, or a related professional discipline.
  • Registered as an Engineer In Training (EIT) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • Advance knowledge of relevant software, such as AutoCAD.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills, with a proven ability to manage remote or hybrid teams.
