Their responsibilities typically include assisting with research, organizing materials, preparing presentations, managing schedules, and helping with the execution of design projects. Design Assistants play a crucial role in ensuring that projects run smoothly and efficiently by handling administrative and creative tasks. They often collaborate closely with senior designers, clients, and vendors to bring creative concepts to life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Assistant, you need a solid grasp of design principles, proficiency in graphic design or interior design basics, and a relevant educational background such as a degree or diploma in design. What are some common challenges design assistants face when collaborating with senior designers and clients?

Design Assistants often navigate balancing creative input with following the vision set by senior designers and clients. Communication is key, as misunderstandings can arise regarding project expectations, deadlines, or feedback. Additionally, adapting to shifting priorities and managing multiple tasks simultaneously can be challenging, but these experiences help develop multitasking and problem-solving skills. Job description

Packaging Design Assistant

Company: Donnamax
Location: Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, NY
Job Type: Full-Time, In-Person
Salary: $40,000–$45,000 per year

About Donnamax

Donnamax is a health and beauty accessories company that designs, develops, and manufactures products sold through major retailers across the country. Our products live in a fast-paced retail environment where strong packaging is essential to catching the customer's attention, communicating the product clearly, and standing out on shelf.

We are looking for a Packaging Design Assistant to join our team at our Ditmas Park office in Brooklyn. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career designer who wants hands-on experience creating real, retail-ready packaging and seeing projects through from concept to finished product.

The Role

As a Packaging Design Assistant, you will work closely with our design and product development teams to help create and execute packaging for a wide range of health, beauty, and personal care accessories.

This is a packaging-focused graphic design position. You will work on physical products and packaging that ultimately appear on the shelves of major retailers.

Please note: We are not looking for UX/UI designers, web designers, or candidates whose portfolios are primarily focused on digital product design. Applicants must demonstrate packaging design work in their portfolio to be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and development of retail packaging from initial concept through final production
  • Create and revise packaging layouts, graphics, typography, and product presentations
  • Prepare production-ready artwork and files for manufacturers and printers
  • Work with existing brand guidelines while also helping develop new visual directions
  • Make revisions based on feedback from internal teams, retail buyers, and customers
  • Create packaging mockups and presentations for internal review and retailer meetings
  • Work with dielines and ensure artwork is properly prepared for production
  • Help manage multiple packaging projects and revisions simultaneously
  • Collaborate with product development, sales, and other members of the Donnamax team
  • Review packaging for accuracy, consistency, and overall visual quality
  • Assist with other graphic design and product-related projects as needed

Qualifications

  • Degree or relevant experience in Graphic Design, Packaging Design, Communication Design, or a related field
  • Packaging design work must be included in your portfolio
  • Strong proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
  • Strong understanding of typography, layout, color, and visual hierarchy
  • Familiarity with packaging dielines and preparing artwork for print/production
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately execute revisions
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Interest in consumer products, retail packaging, health, beauty, and personal care products
  • Recent graduates and early-career designers with strong packaging portfolios are encouraged to apply

Portfolio Requirement

A portfolio demonstrating packaging design experience is required to apply.

We are specifically looking for candidates who are interested in physical packaging, print, branding, and consumer product design. Portfolios consisting primarily of UX/UI, website design, app design, or other digital product design will not be considered a fit for this position.

Why Join Donnamax?

This role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the entire packaging development process. Rather than working only on conceptual projects, you'll help create packaging for real products, work within the requirements of major retailers, collaborate directly with product and sales teams, and learn how designs move from an idea on screen to a finished product on a retail shelf.

Salary: $40,000–$45,000 per year
Schedule: Full-Time
Work Location: In-person at our Ditmas Park, Brooklyn office
