What is the difference between Design And Analysis Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectDesign And Analysis EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related fields; certifications like CAD or FEABachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, simulation centers, manufacturing settingsManufacturing plants, design offices, testing facilities
Industry UsageProduct design, simulation, structural analysisProduct development, manufacturing, systems integration

Design And Analysis Engineers focus on creating and testing product designs using simulations and analysis tools, while Mechanical Engineers often work across broader engineering tasks including manufacturing and systems integration. Both roles require similar credentials and often overlap in work environments, but their primary focus differs on design versus broader engineering functions.

What are Design and Analysis Engineers?

Design and Analysis Engineers are professionals who create, evaluate, and improve products or systems using engineering principles and specialized software. They focus on designing components or structures and then analyzing them to ensure they meet required specifications, safety standards, and performance criteria. Their work often involves computer-aided design (CAD), simulations, and collaborating with other engineers to refine and validate designs before production. They play a crucial role in industries like aerospace, automotive, civil, and manufacturing.

How does a Design and Analysis Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Design and Analysis Engineers often work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including product designers, manufacturing specialists, and quality assurance personnel. Throughout a project, they participate in design reviews, share analysis results, and incorporate feedback to refine product concepts. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as their insights help ensure that designs are both innovative and manufacturable. Regular meetings and collaborative software tools are commonly used to facilitate this dynamic workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design and Analysis Engineer, and why are they important?

A Design and Analysis Engineer typically requires a strong background in engineering principles, CAD proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree such as mechanical, aerospace, or civil engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools like ANSYS, SolidWorks, or MATLAB and certifications in these platforms are highly valued. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and presenting technical findings. These skills ensure the engineer can develop innovative solutions, validate designs, and contribute effectively to cross-functional engineering teams.

Job description

Stress / Structural Analysis Engineer (Remote)
United States | $80,000โ€“$120,000 | Direct-Hire | Remote

This role supports piping and structural analysis efforts for complex mechanical and building systems. The Stress / Structural Analysis Engineer works under the guidance of senior engineers to evaluate piping flexibility, structural loading, and system performance using both analytical methods and engineering software tools. The position blends technical analysis, coordination with multidisciplinary teams, and progressive skill development across piping, structural, and MEP system applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate piping systems to determine the need for flexibility and stress analysis in accordance with applicable ASME B31 codes.
  • Perform piping stress analysis using hand calculations and analysis software to evaluate sustained, pressure, displacement, and occasional load cases.
  • Complete basic pipe stress and pipe wall thickness calculations for pressure and vacuum conditions.
  • Develop and apply analysis models using tools such as CAESAR II, RISA 3D, FEA methods, and supporting hand calculations.
  • Review equipment nozzle loads and recommend piping or equipment configuration adjustments to meet allowable limits.
  • Support development of standard piping support and restraint details to address thermal, seismic, and vibration loading.
  • Coordinate design and analysis activities within 2D and 3D CAD environments.
  • Prepare and release technical documentation summarizing analysis methods, assumptions, and results.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis calculations to support drawing reviews and design verification.
  • Analyze welded and bolted connections for strength and serviceability.
  • Develop analytical models for equipment, framing systems, and MEP distribution assemblies.
  • Perform static and dynamic structural analyses as required by project scope.
  • Review material selections and system requirements for compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Collaborate with internal technical teams to review designs and implement improvements.

General Technical Responsibilities

  • Review vendor documentation for compliance with project and code requirements.
  • Assist with scope definition, cost estimating, and development of engineering solutions.
  • Apply relevant building codes and standards related to piping, thermal stresses, and seismic loading.
  • Develop working knowledge of P&IDs and mechanical system layouts.
  • Support 2D and 3D CAD detailing of piping supports and MEP systems.
  • Interface with third-party reviewers, project teams, and local authorities as needed.
  • Respond to technical questions from internal teams and clients.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Structural Engineering.
  • Two or more years of experience supporting mechanical or structural engineering analysis.
  • Experience with piping stress analysis tools such as CAESAR II, AutoPipe, or similar software.
