The Des Electrical Apprenticeship is a training program designed to prepare individuals for a career as a licensed electrician. It provides hands-on experience and foundational knowledge, but apprentices are not yet fully licensed. In contrast, a Des Electrician has completed the apprenticeship, obtained necessary licenses, and is qualified to perform electrical work independently. The apprenticeship is a stepping stone toward becoming a licensed electrician, who can work more independently and handle complex electrical tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DES Electrical apprentice?

To thrive as a DES Electrical Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of electrical theory, strong math skills, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, as well as adherence to safety protocols and possibly OSHA-10 certification, is commonly expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and a willingness to learn make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality work while progressing toward becoming a licensed electrician.

What is a DES Electrical apprenticeship?

A DES Electrical Apprenticeship is a structured training program that combines on-the-job learning with classroom instruction to prepare individuals for a career as a licensed electrician. DES typically refers to the Department of Employment Services, which may oversee or partner with employers to provide these apprenticeships. Apprentices work under the supervision of experienced electricians, gaining practical skills while earning a wage. The program usually lasts 4-5 years and includes both hands-on training and coursework in electrical theory, safety, and local codes. Upon completion, apprentices are prepared to take the licensing exam to become journeyman electricians.

Job description

Delivery Driver / Electrical Solutions Specialist

Ampacity is looking for a Delivery Driver / Electrical Solutions Specialist to support our supply chain and customer operations out of our Des Moines Distribution Center. You'll be responsible for getting electrical materials safely and accurately to customers, jobsites, and project locations - a mix of local runs, day trips, and occasional overnight travel.

This is more than a delivery job. Think of it like a City Desk position at an electrical distributor - you're out in the field representing Ampacity's operations, customer service, and sales teams all at once. You'll work directly with customers on active job sites, using your electrical know-how to help them pick the right materials, spot ways to save labor, and run their projects more efficiently.

We're looking for someone who knows electrical materials and construction practices, and who's good with people - someone who can build real relationships with contractors, project managers, foremen, and crews on the ground. You'll work closely with our Des Moines Operations team to keep customers happy and help our supply chain keep growing. Pay Range: $27- $30/hourly

What You'll Do
  • Safely drive company vehicles for local deliveries, day trips, and occasional overnight runs
  • Load, secure, transport, and unload electrical materials and equipment with care
  • Double-check delivery quantities to make sure customers get exactly what they ordered
  • Follow all DOT, OSHA, company, and customer safety rules
  • Help promote a safe work environment and lead by example
  • Build strong, lasting relationships with customers through great service
  • Act as a field-based extension of Ampacity's customer service and operations teams
  • Use your electrical know-how to help customers with product selection and installation questions
  • Serve as a go-to expert on electrical materials, equipment, and industry best practices
  • Work directly with contractors, project managers, foremen, and crews to find ways to save time and labor on the job
  • Recommend labor-saving products, prefab solutions, and smarter material management to boost customer productivity
  • Pass along customer feedback, project needs, and new business opportunities to the team
  • Help with warehouse tasks like receiving, staging, organizing, and inventory
  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and liftgate-equipped delivery vehicles safely
  • Keep accurate records — vehicle inspections, delivery of paperwork, etc.
  • Keep your work area clean and safe
  • Pitch in on same-day deliveries when needed

Typical Work Environment

  • The Des Moines warehouse and delivery environment will include regular exposure to factors that may cause moderate physical discomfort, including varying weather conditions, dust, fumes, odors, construction sites, and industrial facilities.
  • This role requires frequent driving, walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting, and maneuvering materials and equipment.
  • Regular loading, unloading, and handling of electrical materials weighing 50+ pounds may be required.
  • Work will be performed in warehouse environments, customer facilities, active construction sites, and outdoor settings.
  • The position requires local deliveries as well as occasional day and overnight travel.
  • This is a highly customer-facing role requiring professionalism, communication skills, and the ability to represent Ampacity in the field.
What You'll Bring
  • 3+ years in the electrical industry preferred — as an electrician, apprentice, foreman, warehouse specialist, project coordinator, or similar role
  • Solid working knowledge of electrical materials, equipment, and construction practices
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; forklift and liftgate vehicle experience a plus
  • Strong communicator with a knack for customer service and building relationships
  • A detail-oriented problem-solver who can spot ways to save customers time and labor
  • Comfortable juggling multiple tasks
  • Familiarity with logistics or delivery software a plus
What You'll Get
  • Competitive pay and 401k — because your work should be rewarded fairly
  • Time off you'll actually use: vacation, sick days, holidays, parental, and bereavement leave
  • Full medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus extra support when you need it
  • Wellness resources to help you show up as your best self, at work and at home
  • Real room to grow — we promote from within and invest in your development
