Position Summary

Interwest is seeking a talented, leadership-minded professional to join our team in the San Francisco Bay Area as a Senior Building Inspector / Deputy Building Official. This is a dynamic, multi-faceted leadership role designed for a motivated self-starter who excels in both technical execution, administrative management, and relationship cultivation.

In this role, you will provide direct supervision and leadership to a team of field inspectors and permit technicians within the assigned jurisdiction. You will manage these direct reports while remaining agile enough to perform field inspections and as needed in-house plan review. Additionally, you will step into Deputy Building Official role, serving as a critical regulatory anchor for the Building Official. Beyond technical and administrative enforcement, this position is deeply rooted in business development, high-level customer service, and proactive client relationship managementโ€”ensuring Interwest continues to deliver premier, seamless service that reflects our value back to the community the position will serve.

  • Team Leadership & Management: Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and operational guidance to a team of building inspectors and permit technicians; manage direct reports, conduct performance evaluations, and oversee daily field and counter resource allocation.
  • Deputy Building Official Duties: Act as the designated Deputy Building Official, interpreting codes, resolving complex disputes, and ensuring municipal operations align with state mandates.
  • Client & Customer Relations: Serve as a primary point of contact for municipal clients, developers, and contractors, delivering elite customer service and maintaining high-level relationship health.
  • Business Development Support: Identify opportunities to expand Interwest service footprint within San Diego County by demonstrating proactive problem-solving and consultative regulatory support to current and prospective clients.
  • Field Inspections: Performs daily field inspections of residential, commercial, and public facility construction projects across client jurisdictions to ensure compliance on an as-needed basis. (upon client request and/or sick and vacation time fill-in)
  • Code Interpretation & Consultation: Provides recommendations regarding interpretations of city, State, Federal, and construction standards, as well as local ordinances.
  • Plan Review Coordination: Review primarily residential plans to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
  • Data & Permitting Management: Maintains accurate records to document inspections, test results, and additional details, entering results into permitting software.
  • Operational Adaptability: Perform other related duties as required.
Required Skills & Attributes
  • Regulatory & Administrative Expertise: Extensive knowledge of local building codes, current construction procedures/technology, and modern building department permitting workflows.
  • Diplomacy & Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to positively interact with staff, the general public, contractors, governmental entities, and other clientele.
  • Judgement & Autonomy: Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and a considerable amount of independent judgment.
  • Organization: Good time management, organization, and attention to detail skills, with a demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced atmosphere.
  • Digital Proficiency: Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and municipal permitting logs.
  • Professional Alignment: Candidate must stay familiar and up to date with different editions of the building codes.
Experience, Licenses & Certifications
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in municipal building inspections, code enforcement, or permit center operations.
  • Certified Building Official (CBO): The ability to successfully obtain the ICC Certified Building Official (CBO) certification within the first one (1) year of employment is required.
  • Inspector Certifications: ICC Combination Residential and/or Commercial Building Inspector certifications
  • CASp Certification (Preferred): CASp Certification is highly preferred.
  • California Context: California-specific licenses and certifications are highly desirable.
  • Salary Range: 140,000 - 155,000; Plus Annual Bonus
  • Transportation: This position includes a dedicated company vehicle and a fuel card for all travel between client jurisdictions.
