Job Summary
This position leads the shipping and receiving department; inspects and receives all incoming packages, sets mail out for pickup by Purdue Mail Service; crates and wraps all outgoing packages for shipment; keeps proper records on all incoming and outgoing packages and materials; helps load and unload commercial and Purdue trucks. Assists Building Operations Manager with school safety training, documentation, and lab inspections. Works independently. Serves as Acting Building Deputy when building deputy is unavailable. Submits work order requests for maintenance of building. Performs maintenance tasks on all safety equipment, including, but not limited to, Eye Wash Stations and AED machines, point of contact for campus maintenance team staff, zones staff, shops staff, and general labor (bullgang) staff.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Inspects, receives and records all incoming packages.
  • Reports all damaged packages to the General Stores Mail Service or appropriate carrier.
  • Delivers packages or notifies recipients of packages to be picked up.
  • Sorts all outgoing campus and US Mail.
  • Keeps records on all incoming and outgoing packages and materials.
  • Sets out outgoing mail and picks up incoming mail at back loading dock.
  • Helps load and unload commercial freight and Purdue service trucks.
  • Delivers and picks up mail from designated areas.
  • Coordinates the shipping and receiving functions for the Mechanical Engineering building.
  • Responsible for the record keeping and management of incoming and outgoing distribution of all incoming and outgoing deliveries.
  • Works with general labor (Bullgang) and external moving and rigging companies for delivering and removing furniture and lab equipment.
  • Carries out other mail-related duties as directed by the Building Operations Manager.
  • Serves as Assistant Building Deputy and assists the Building Operations Manager in the general maintenance and upkeep of the Mechanical Engineering building.
  • Serves as acting building deputy when the Building Operations Manager is absent.
  • Routinely monitors building upkeep and overall conditions.
  • Conducts minor repairs and maintenance (plumbing, painting, drywall, carpentry).
  • Coordinates the installation and removal of office furniture and lab equipment.
  • Moves furniture as required to meet school needs.
  • Handle inquiries from Faculty, staff and/or students about the need for maintenance to the building or equipment located in laboratories.
  • Assist in movement of apparatus and equipment as needed.
  • Oversee building & laboratory safety and security.
  • Assist Building Operations Manager with safety training, documentation, and inspections.
  • Communicate with building occupants to ensure staff and students comply with laboratory standards, understand building operation changes, and adhere to safety and security guidelines.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory records of all hazardous chemicals and Material Safety Data Sheets (SDS) used in the Loading Dock area. Maintains and records maintenance on AED machines and eyewash stations.
  • May be contacted at home in the event of an unusual circumstance or emergency.
