What is TMS?

Although antidepressants and talk therapy are treatment options for depression, over half of patients still experience symptoms after trying these conventional treatments. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe and effective treatment for depression that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain responsible for mood. TMS is non-invasive (does not require surgery), non-systemic (does not affect the entire body), covered by most insurance and has no drug- related side effects.

What's Involved in TMS Treatment?

During TMS treatment, patients recline in a private treatment room and may relax, read, work, or watch television during TMS treatment. A TMS magnet is positioned over the patient's head to deliver gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain underactive in those with depression. Each treatment sessions lasts about 20 minutes, after which patients can get back to their days right away, including work or school.

TMS Technician Responsibilities:

  • Administer TMS treatments according to specific physician protocols. Set up the TMS device and monitor all aspects of the treatment sessions for patient comfort and treatment accuracy.
  • Provide excellent patient care and treat patients with compassion while developing trust and rapport. Provide support, reflective listening, and compassion to patients struggling with depression and/or anxiety.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with patient comfort, coil contact, and TMS system setup throughout treatment.

  • Record session notes, track insurance authorizations, and schedule patient visits using EMR and medical scheduling software.
  • Communicate with a team of certified TMS psychiatrists who oversee patient treatment at multiple office locations.
