The Laboratory Assistant Level I is a multi-skilled position that efficiently processes patient and specimen workflow. The Lab Assistant performs the pre-analytic phases of laboratory testing procedures and may also perform the analytic and post analytic phases of waived and moderately complex testing procedures. Duties include face to face and telephone customer service, computer data entry and retrieval, instrument maintenance, and proper documentation for all activities. The Lab Assistant is also responsible for monitoring supplies and compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements related to safety and lab testing.
Education
High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
Experience
A student enrolled in an accredited program in one of the following:

An Associates or Bachelor of Science program in a science related major or clinical laboratory program (MLT or MT)

OR

Has one of the following:

1 year of health care setting experience

Certification as a medical assistant (MA) or phlebotomist
Qualifications
Medical terminology preferred. Must be willing to handle blood and body fluids. Ability to multi-task and prioritize under stressful situations. Demonstrates knowledge /competence of CAP and JCAHO Laboratory patient safety initiatives and applies these to all aspects of diagnostic testing. Exhibits communication skills, both written and verbal, and demonstrates scientific knowledge and consistent excellence and focus on patient care. Must have the ability to consistently pay attention to detail while maintaining quality and productivity. Must be able to prioritize work and situational professional demands. Must maintain a professional demeanor and communication, both verbal and written, when under stress. Must exhibit professional and respectful interaction in all situations with patients, patients, physicians and employees.
