Deltav Engineer information

What is a Deltav engineer?

A DeltaV Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting Emerson's DeltaV distributed control system (DCS) in industrial automation environments. They work in industries like oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing to ensure process control systems operate efficiently and reliably. Their tasks include configuring system software, developing control strategies, integrating hardware, and optimizing system performance. Additionally, they provide technical support, conduct testing, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve automation processes.

What are some typical projects or daily tasks a Deltav engineer handles in their role?

Deltav Engineers are frequently involved in designing, configuring, and maintaining automation control systems for industrial plants, such as those in the oil and gas, pharmaceutical, or manufacturing sectors. Daily tasks may include developing control logic, supporting system commissioning, troubleshooting network or hardware issues, and collaborating with process engineers to optimize plant operations. They also create detailed documentation, perform upgrades or migrations of DeltaV systems, and ensure compliance with safety and operational standards. Team-based problem-solving and cross-functional collaboration are common, as these engineers work closely with both engineering and operations staff. This variety provides opportunities for technical growth and advancement into lead or specialized roles over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Deltav engineer position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Deltav Engineer, you need a solid background in process control engineering, automation systems, and hands-on experience with Emerson DeltaV Distributed Control Systems, often backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with control system programming, network configuration, and certifications such as Emerson DeltaV certification are typically desirable. Strong troubleshooting abilities, effective communication, and teamwork skills separate top candidates in this position. These skills ensure the efficient design, implementation, and maintenance of critical control systems essential for industrial operations.

Job description

MissionHires is seeking a Senior Automation Engineer (DeltaV) to lead the implementation, governance, and continuous improvement of automation systems across North American manufacturing facilities. This role drives corporate automation strategy, owns technical standards and lifecycle planning, oversees major capital projects, ensures seamless data integration (Aveva PI), and advances safety, cybersecurity, and operational excellence. The ideal candidate has deep DeltaV expertise, batch control (S88) experience, strong project/vendor management skills, and proven results in regulated, PSM environments.

Responsibilities
  • Execute and evolve a corporate automation strategy aligned with business goals, manufacturing excellence, and digital transformation.
  • Establish and maintain corporate technical standards for control system design, instrumentation, programming, architecture, and cybersecurity.
  • Evaluate and pilot emerging technologies (APC, ML/AI tools) for value and feasibility.
  • Facilitate technical forums to drive knowledge sharing, collaboration, and standardization across sites.
  • Benchmark current automation systems versus industry best practices to identify improvements.
  • Oversee design, configuration, programming, simulation, testing, and commissioning of process control solutions for capital projects and standard rollouts.
  • Champion S88-compliant batch control system design and provide tools/training for plant engineers.
  • Specify and select instrumentation, control valves, and network hardware in line with standards and hazardous area requirements.
  • Develop and maintain scalable, reliable, and secure control system architectures integrated with enterprise systems.
  • Lead control loop optimization, alarm management rationalization, and advanced regulatory control implementation.
  • Create and manage control system lifecycle and obsolescence plans to minimize operational risk.
  • Develop and manage the corporate automation capital plan; identify needs, justify projects, and secure funding.
  • Provide final technical approval for automation-related CERs and ensure strategic/technical alignment (typical $25kโ€“$2M+).
  • Oversee execution of major automation projects to scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety expectations.
  • Manage vendor, integrator, and contractor relationships, including agreements, pricing, and support structures; approve high-value invoices and change orders.
  • Ensure seamless integration and effective utilization of Avevaโ€™s PI System across sites and platforms.
  • Leverage business intelligence tools to build reports, dashboards, and analytics for operations, quality, and leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with PSM, OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and applicable regulations; embed safety-in-design.
  • Participate in and support HAZOPs and LOPA reviews.
  • Develop and enforce OT cybersecurity policies (segmentation, access control, patching, incident response, vendor assessments).
Requirements
  • BS in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering (BSCHE, BSME, or BSEE).
  • 10+ years of experience in automation/control systems within manufacturing environments.
  • Handsโ€‘on Emerson DeltaV expertise (required), including configuration, programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with batch control and S88 methodology (preferred).
  • Experience working within Process Safety Management (PSM) regulated environments (preferred).
  • Proven leadership of multiโ€‘site automation initiatives and crossโ€‘functional engineering teams or contractors.
  • Demonstrated success managing automationโ€‘related capital projects ($25kโ€“$2M+) to scope, schedule, budget, and quality.
  • Strong knowledge of instrumentation, control valves, industrial networks, and hazardous area classifications.
  • Experience with control loop tuning, alarm management, and advanced regulatory control.
  • Proficiency integrating control systems with enterprise systems and data historians (Aveva PI).
  • Familiarity with business intelligence/reporting tools to develop operational dashboards and analytics.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable codes, standards, and regulations (OSHA, EPA, NFPA, RAGAGEP).
  • OT cybersecurity experience: network segmentation, access control, patch management, incident response, vendor risk.
  • Excellent communication, vendor management, and stakeholder alignment skills.
  • Willingness to travel to North American manufacturing sites as needed.
