What is a defense contractor analyst?

A Defense Contractor Analyst is a professional who evaluates, monitors, and provides recommendations on contracts and projects undertaken by private companies for government defense agencies. They analyze costs, compliance, risks, and performance to ensure that contracts meet legal and regulatory requirements and deliver value to the client, often the Department of Defense. Their work helps improve project outcomes, minimize waste or fraud, and ensure that national security interests are maintained. This role typically requires strong analytical skills, familiarity with government contracting regulations, and sometimes a security clearance.

What are some typical challenges a defense contractor analyst may face when working with cross-functional teams?

Defense Contractor Analysts often collaborate with engineering, legal, and procurement teams to ensure project compliance and efficiency. A common challenge is balancing differing priorities and communication styles across departments, which can lead to misunderstandings or delays. To succeed, analysts need strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a clear understanding of both contractual requirements and technical aspects. Building strong professional relationships and maintaining regular, transparent communication are key strategies for overcoming these challenges and achieving project goals.

Job description

SUMMARY

We're looking for a Metrology Engineer who thinks beyond the measurement, someone who engineers quality into the process not just inspects for it after the fact. This is not a traditional CMM programmer seat. You'll own the development of robust, operator-executable CMM programs and measurement systems that reduce reliance on any single individual and drive risk, variation, and waste out of the process.

You’ll work alongside the Quality Department serving as a key technical resource for CMM troubleshooting, training, and continuous improvement. The expectation is that the programs and systems you build empower the inspection team to execute independently at a high level.

ABOUT US

Karman Space & Defense provides concept-to-production solutions for mission-critical systems on spacecraft, launch vehicles, missiles, hypersonics, and integrated defense systems. We believe that solving the industry’s most complex and mission-critical challenges requires relentless determination and a willingness to push the boundaries of possibility. Karman Space & Defense brings to bear unparalleled production capabilities, unmatched engineering expertise, and unflinching analysis to render the impossible, possible.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Company Paid Life Insurance
  • 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Paid Holidays

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Experience programming and operating CMMs in a precision manufacturing environment; MCOSMOS experience strongly preferred
  • Solid working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and its practical application in part inspection
  • Demonstrated ability to develop systems, programs, and documentation that enables operator independence
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Working knowledge of other metrology equipment for validation and oversight (optical comparators, hand tools, surface plate methods)
  • Familiarity with MSA, SPC, and measurement uncertainty concepts
  • Effective communicator across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience in aerospace or another regulated manufacturing industry preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, metrology, or a related field preferred; equivalent hands-on experience considered
