Defect Manager information

What is a defect manager?

Defect Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the defect management process within a project or organization, particularly in software development and quality assurance. They coordinate the identification, documentation, prioritization, tracking, and resolution of defects (bugs or issues) found during testing phases. Defect Managers act as a bridge between testing teams and developers to ensure that defects are addressed efficiently and do not hinder project timelines. Their role is crucial to maintaining product quality and ensuring that all issues are properly managed before release.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a defect manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Defect Manager, you need a strong background in software testing, quality assurance, and defect lifecycle management, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with defect tracking tools such as JIRA, Bugzilla, or HP ALM, as well as knowledge of test management systems, is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities are vital soft skills for collaborating with development and testing teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring timely resolution of defects, maintaining product quality, and streamlining the software delivery process.

What are some common challenges a defect manager faces when coordinating between development and QA teams?

Defect Managers often encounter challenges such as ensuring clear communication between development and QA teams, prioritizing defects based on business impact, and managing tight release deadlines. Balancing multiple stakeholders’ expectations while maintaining accurate defect tracking can also be demanding. Successful Defect Managers proactively facilitate meetings, clarify defect statuses, and help develop efficient workflows to resolve issues quickly, fostering a collaborative environment.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior QA Engineer (Web) based in Finland.

This is a senior quality assurance role focused on ensuring the reliability and quality of business-critical web features from technical hand-off through production release.
You will own testing strategy and execution across functional, exploratory, regression, UI/UX, cross-browser, and end-to-end API scenarios.
The role combines strong web testing expertise with close collaboration across Product, Front-End, Back-End Engineering, and Architecture.
You will help establish thorough test coverage, identify defects early, and ensure releases meet high standards for stability and user experience.
You will also contribute to production validation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of QA processes and metrics.
The environment is fully remote, international, and collaborative, with opportunities to contribute to test automation and modern quality practices.
This is an opportunity to have meaningful ownership over product quality while working with a globally distributed technology team.

Accountabilities
  • Drive quality assurance for business features from technical hand-off through successful production release, ensuring functionality, stability, and user experience meet expected standards.
  • Review technical specifications, identify testing requirements, prepare test plans, and create comprehensive test cases and checklists before stabilization begins.
  • Estimate testing efforts accurately, communicate expectations clearly, and consistently deliver committed QA work within agreed timelines.
  • Execute functional, exploratory, regression, UI/UX, cross-browser, responsive, and end-to-end API testing across modern browsers and viewport configurations.
  • Validate web applications across Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and mobile-responsive environments, identifying browser-specific and device-related issues.
  • Perform API testing using REST and GraphQL interfaces, including test-data preparation and validation of backend behavior.
  • Support web test automation initiatives and contribute to automated coverage where appropriate, including through frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium.
  • Maintain thorough test documentation, participate in peer reviews, and review test automation code when involved in automation activities.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Front-End and Back-End Engineers, Architects, and other stakeholders throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Support production releases by validating builds, conducting smoke and regression testing, and monitoring live application errors and performance after deployment.
  • Investigate defects using browser developer tools and debugging proxies, helping teams identify root causes and reproduce issues efficiently.
  • Track and improve key QA metrics, including escaped defect rates and test coverage, using data to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to the ongoing evolution of QA processes, standards, documentation, and testing practices across the product development lifecycle.
Requirements
  • Strong foundation in QA methodology, test design, defect management, and the overall software testing lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated experience testing modern web applications, with a solid understanding of client-server architecture and technologies including HTTP/HTTPS, REST, DOM, cookies, cache, and local storage.
  • Hands-on experience with cross-browser and responsive testing across Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and mobile viewports.
  • Comfortable using browser DevTools and debugging or interception proxies such as Proxyman, Charles, Fiddler, or equivalent tools.
  • Practical API testing experience with Postman, REST and/or GraphQL, including the ability to work effectively with test data.
  • Experience using Jira, Allure TestOps or a similar test management platform, and Git.
  • Experience with web test automation using Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium is a strong advantage.
  • Basic scripting knowledge in JavaScript/TypeScript or Python is a plus, particularly for supporting automated testing and QA tooling.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues systematically and assess their potential impact.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple testing activities and meet delivery commitments.
  • Clear and effective communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and product teams.
  • Fluent Russian and good English are both required for effective communication within the international working environment.
Benefits
  • Fully remote, full-time work from Slovenia.
  • The initial compensation level or salary range will be communicated to candidates during the recruitment process and before employment begins.
  • 28 calendar days of vacation per year.
  • 7 wellness days annually, providing additional paid time off for personal matters, recovery, or household needs without requiring sick leave.
  • Referral bonuses of up to $5,000 for successfully recommending candidates who join the organization.
  • 50% reimbursement for professional training, international conferences, and professional meetings.
  • Corporate discounts for English-language lessons.
  • Health support of up to $1,000 gross per year per employee where corporate medical insurance is not available, which can be used toward self-purchased health insurance or eligible medical expenses for the employee and close relatives.
  • Workplace setup support, including an equipped workplace and necessary equipment in available offices or coworking locations.
  • Reimbursement of home-office or coworking expenses of up to $1,000 gross once every three years, based on eligible expenses, including desk, chair, internet, or coworking costs.
  • Internal gamified recognition and appreciation system, allowing employees to receive rewards from colleagues and exchange them for merchandise, team-building activities, massage certificates, and other benefits.
  • International and fully distributed working environment with opportunities to collaborate across cultures and regions.
  • Professional development opportunities through training, conferences, language learning, and knowledge-sharing activities.
