What is deep ocean engineering?

Deep ocean engineering is a specialized field that focuses on designing, building, and maintaining technology and infrastructure used in deep-sea environments. This includes underwater vehicles, subsea structures, and systems for exploration, research, resource extraction, and environmental monitoring in the deep ocean, often at depths exceeding 200 meters. Engineers in this field address challenges like high pressure, low temperatures, and limited accessibility, making it a highly technical and interdisciplinary area of engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a deep ocean engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deep Ocean Engineer, you need a solid background in marine engineering, oceanography, and mechanical or electrical engineering, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, underwater robotics, sonar systems, and certifications in underwater operations or ROV piloting are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and adaptability to challenging environments help individuals excel in demanding offshore projects. These capabilities are crucial for designing, operating, and maintaining complex systems in harsh deep-sea conditions, ensuring both project success and safety.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in deep ocean engineering projects?

Professionals in deep ocean engineering often encounter challenges such as harsh and unpredictable underwater environments, which can complicate the deployment and maintenance of equipment. Working at significant depths also requires strict adherence to safety protocols and the use of specialized technology, such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) or submersibles. Additionally, close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including marine biologists, geologists, and software engineers—is essential to ensure project success and address technical issues quickly. These factors make adaptability, strong communication, and technical problem-solving critical skills in the field.

What is the difference between Deep Ocean Engineering vs Marine Engineer?

AspectDeep Ocean EngineeringMarine Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, specialized training in oceanic environmentsEngineering degree, maritime certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentUnderwater, deep-sea, offshore platformsShips, vessels, shipyards, coastal facilities
Industry UsageOil & gas, subsea construction, researchShip design, maintenance, propulsion systems

Deep Ocean Engineers focus on designing and maintaining equipment and structures for deep-sea environments, often working offshore or underwater. Marine Engineers work primarily on ships and maritime vessels, handling propulsion, systems, and maintenance. While both roles require engineering credentials and involve maritime environments, Deep Ocean Engineering emphasizes underwater and offshore projects, whereas Marine Engineering centers on ship operations and design.

We are looking for individuals who thrive on making an impact and want the excitement of being on a team that wins.
Job Description
Teledyne Micropac is looking for a Test Engineering Manager who will be responsible for leading and continuously improving production and development test activities for high-reliability electronic products supporting aerospace, defense, and space applications. This role manages a team of test engineers and technicians, maintains and evolves production test capability, and serves as a strong advocate for test engineering needs across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Program Management.
The successful candidate combines strong technical expertise in electronic test systems with proven leadership skills, clear communication, and a continuous-improvement mindset.
What you'll do
The essential functions and key responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Directly manage and develop a team of approximately 5 test engineers and technicians.
  • Assign resources to support production sustainment, development programs, qualification activities, and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Advocate for test engineering needs related to staffing, capital equipment, training, and schedule commitments.
  • Own the health, availability, and performance of production test equipment across product lines.
  • Establish and maintain preventative maintenance and obsolescence mitigation plans.
  • Drive rapid containment and root-cause resolution for test-related production issues.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce test time, improve throughput, and enhance yield while maintaining product quality and compliance.
  • Work closely with cross functional groups such as Operations, Quality, Engineering, and Program Management on test readiness, risks, and resources.
  • Support product development activities with test deliverables, including:
    • Test Requirements Reviews (TRRs)
    • Test hardware and fixtures
    • LabVIEW-based test software
    • Test plans, procedures, and validation documentation

What you'll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required or related technical discipline with a minimum of 7 years of experience. In lieu of a bachelor's degree, a minimum of 10 years of directly related test engineering experience may be considered.
  • Strong technical background in electronics and electronic test equipment (automated and bench-level) - required
  • Demonstrated experience developing and supporting ATE systems, including LabVIEW-based test software - required
  • Prior experience managing or leading engineers and technicians in a manufacturing or development environment - required
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex test failures involving hardware, software, and product interactions - required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills - required
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or space electronics manufacturing - advantage
  • Familiarity with high-reliability standards (e.g., MIL-STD-883, MIL-PRF-38534, MIL-PRF-19500) - advantage
  • Hands-on technical leader who can dive deep when needed, while still driving strategy and improvements - advantage
  • Organized, pragmatic, and able to balance short-term production needs with long-term capability development - advantage

What we offer
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Retirement savings plan with company match
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Opportunities for professional growth and innovation
  • A mission-driven culture focused on exploration and sustainability
