What is a deck steward?

Deck stewards are crew members on cruise ships, yachts, or other passenger vessels responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order on the ship's decks and outdoor areas. They assist guests by setting up lounge chairs, providing towels, and ensuring poolside amenities are available and tidy. Deck stewards also support safety procedures and may help with minor maintenance tasks or assist during emergency situations. Their role is key to ensuring passengers have a comfortable and enjoyable experience while on deck.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a deck steward, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deck Steward, you need strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of safety and hygiene standards, often supported by prior hospitality or maritime experience. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, safety procedures, and sometimes STCW certification is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure make someone stand out in this role. These abilities are essential to ensure guest satisfaction, maintain a safe environment, and contribute effectively to ship operations.

What are the main challenges a deck steward may face when working on a cruise ship or large vessel?

Deck Stewards often work long hours in outdoor environments, which can be physically demanding and require excellent stamina. They are responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order on decks, assisting passengers, and ensuring safety protocols are followed, all while providing outstanding customer service. Adapting to a multicultural team and handling high guest volumes during peak times are common challenges. However, the role offers the opportunity to build hospitality skills, travel, and advance within the maritime or hospitality industry.

Their work environments differ, with Deck Stewards working outdoors on decks and Bar Stewards working indoors in bar areas. Both roles are essential in the hospitality and maritime industries, but they serve distinct functions.

How do you become a deck steward?

To become a deck steward, candidates typically need to have good communication skills, customer service experience, and often a background in hospitality or maritime environments. Some positions require certifications such as STCW or first aid training, and previous experience working on ships or in hospitality can be advantageous.
