The main difference between a Deck Engine Utility and a Deck Engineer lies in their responsibilities and certifications. Deck Engine Utility personnel primarily handle engine room tasks and maintenance, often with basic engineering certifications. Deck Engineers have more advanced engineering qualifications and oversee engine operations and repairs. Both roles are essential in maritime operations, but Deck Engineers typically have a broader scope of technical duties and higher certifications.

What are Deck Engine Utility workers?

Deck Engine Utility (DEU) workers are entry-level crew members on ships who perform a variety of duties to support both the deck and engine departments. Their responsibilities include cleaning, maintenance, assisting with cargo operations, and helping with routine engine room tasks. DEUs play a key role in ensuring the vessel operates smoothly and safely, and the position is often a starting point for those seeking a maritime career. Over time, DEUs can gain experience and certifications to advance to more specialized positions onboard.

What are some common challenges faced by a Deck Engine Utility and how can they be managed effectively?

Deck Engine Utility personnel often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly changing weather conditions, maintaining safety during physically demanding tasks, and coordinating between deck and engine departments. Effective communication, rigorous adherence to safety protocols, and staying updated on equipment handling procedures are key to managing these challenges. Additionally, being proactive in learning from experienced crew members helps Deck Engine Utilities build confidence and competence, making the work more efficient and safe.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Deck Engine Utility, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deck Engine Utility, you need a solid understanding of vessel operations, basic mechanical and maintenance skills, and maritime safety, often supported by a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) and relevant safety certifications. Familiarity with shipboard machinery, hand tools, and safety management systems is typically required. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure safe and efficient vessel operations, minimize risks, and promote smooth coordination among crew members.

Job description

About the Role

We are makers. We create because we are curious, and we believe that the best way to prove an idea works is to make it real.

As the GCD, Scaled CRM & Performance, you will lead the creative vision, systemic strategy, and asset excellence across our clients' largest scaled digital workstreams. This is a transformation-focused senior leadership role built for a modern creative architect who understands how to build hard-working, high-velocity digital campaigns. You will oversee a cross-functional global team delivering thousands of performance-driven assets annually-including sophisticated lifecycle email ecosystems, B2B and B2C landing pages, performance marketing engines, and platform-native digital campaigns.

Your mandate is to elevate every transactional touchpoint to world-class excellence (clear, useful, human) while driving a culture of responsible automation. You will lead the consolidation of legacy creative teams across business units, stripping out manual friction to establish a modernized, tech-enabled model where human artistry meets machine speed. This role requires immense change management grit; you must possess the leadership presence and strategic stamina needed to restructure legacy teams, challenge defensive ways of working, and systematically transition a massive operational engine into an automated, AI-native future.

Responsibilities:
  • Systemic Brand & Performance Direction: Enforce an uncompromising narrative and visual standard across all scaled channels. Ensure that high-volume, localized, and automated assets feel premium, clear, and contextually relevant.
  • Operational Overhaul & Program Architecture: Partner directly with leadership across account, strategy, production and content innovation to establish comprehensive program management. Lead the structural evolution of the business by turning micro-processes into macro changes, moving the team away from fragmented, manual workflows.
  • Responsible Automation & Innovation Culture: Partner with implementation engineers and technology leads to foster a culture of active experimentation, driving the integration of AI across all forms of creative output and ways of making. Oversee the scaled rollout of automated toolkits responsibly, ensuring that technology acts as a creative unlock to expand capabilities without compromising structural quality.
  • Uncompromising Artistry Standards: Act as the ultimate gatekeeper for holistic craft across all creative disciplines. Ensure that copywriting, concept development, design standards, email best practices, typography, layout precision, motion graphics, and all other elements of textual and visual artistry are upheld to our highest creative standards, regardless of production volume.
  • Unified Vision & Senior Team Evolution: Define the overarching creative roadmap and empower the senior creative leaders underneath you to actively champion it within their dedicated workstreams. Clearly separate high-level strategic vision from day-to-day project execution, ensuring your leadership layer is driving business growth and client confidence while holding teams accountable to a future-facing model.
  • Client Trust & Growth Portfolio: Act as an authoritative strategic peer to client VPs and Product Marketing Directors (PMMs). Elevate the agency's relationship from a traditional execution utility to a trusted growth partner that proactively unlocks new digital marketing scopes.
About YouThe essentials:
  • Senior Agency Leadership: 12+ years of experience leading cross-functional creative teams within top-tier digital agencies or tech-native brand organizations, with a proven track record managing large-scale global accounts.
  • Performance Marketing & CRM Mastery: Deep expertise in the architecture of high-volume digital advertising, lifecycle email infrastructure, data-driven CRM systems, and UX/UI performance metrics.
  • Technical Literacy & "Maker" Mindset: A forward-thinking leader who understands the mechanics of how work is made and has a proven interest in using AI suites, dynamic creative optimization (DCO), and automated toolkits to accelerate output.
  • Exceptional Craft & Precision: A sharp eye for design, motion, and narrative structure. The ability to look at a highly structured B2B deck, a localized performance banner, or a complex email sequence and immediately identify how to elevate its artistic execution.
  • Change Management Grit: The senior-level presence and emotional intelligence required to restructure legacy teams, disrupt long-standing production habits, and transition a massive operational engine into an automated, tech-enabled future.

At Monks, we believe in fostering an environment where a diversity of perspectives can thrive. We proactively work to design hiring processes that promote equity and inclusion while mitigating bias. We celebrate diversity and are committed to building a team that reflects the communities we serve. We welcome and encourage qualified applicants, from all backgrounds, who are excited to contribute to our mission.

This role is subject to our Return to Office (RTO) policy. If you reside within a commutable distance of one of our office locations, you will be expected to work from the office a set number of days per week. The specific details, including the number of required office days, will be in accordance with the company's then-current RTO policy, which is subject to change from time to time.
