What is a decision engineer?

Decision Engineers are professionals who apply analytical, mathematical, and computational techniques to help organizations make data-driven decisions. They often use tools from operations research, data science, and systems engineering to evaluate complex options, optimize processes, and predict outcomes. Their work enables businesses to solve challenging problems, improve efficiency, and minimize risks in decision-making processes.

How does a decision engineer typically collaborate with data scientists and business stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions?

Decision Engineers frequently act as a bridge between technical teams and business stakeholders. In a typical workflow, they collaborate with data scientists to understand the underlying data models and analytical outputs, then work closely with business leaders to translate these insights into actionable strategies. This often involves facilitating discussions to clarify business objectives, ensuring analytical approaches align with end goals, and iteratively refining solutions based on feedback. Strong communication and project management skills are essential, as Decision Engineers must synthesize complex information and drive consensus among diverse teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a decision engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Decision Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, expertise in data modeling, and a background in fields like operations research, mathematics, or computer science. Familiarity with decision analysis tools, optimization software (such as CPLEX or Gurobi), and programming languages like Python or R is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to synthesize complex information are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies enable Decision Engineers to develop effective solutions for complex business challenges and drive data-informed decision-making.

What is the difference between Decision Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectDecision EngineerData Scientist
Required credentialsBachelor's or master's in engineering, analytics, or related fieldsBachelor's or master's in statistics, computer science, or related fields
Work environmentFocus on designing decision models, algorithms, and optimization processesFocus on analyzing data, building predictive models, and extracting insights
Employer and industry usageUsed in industries like manufacturing, finance, and logistics for decision automationCommon in tech, finance, healthcare for data analysis and modeling

Decision Engineers primarily develop decision models and optimize processes to improve business outcomes, while Data Scientists analyze data to generate insights and predictive models. Both roles require strong analytical skills, but Decision Engineers focus more on decision automation and operational efficiency, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

Job description

About the role
  • Establish the MBSE baseline. Deliver a SysML architecture for naval power systems that serves as the authoritative source of truth for requirements traceability, interface definitions, and design margins across the program.
  • Advance SE applications for naval ship design and acquisition. Identify and prototype systems engineering methods (e.g., model-based requirements management, digital thread integration, trade space analysis) that improve design quality and acquisition decision-making across the naval ship design lifecycle, from concept development through contract award.
  • Accelerate the SE workflow. Build and deploy SE tooling and automation that demonstrably reduce design-decision cycle time (e.g., trade study turnaround, requirements change impact analysis), with measurable before/after benchmarks.
  • Enable warfighting design-space exploration. Deliver integrated, model-based decision support capability that allows notional design teams to evaluate power system design options against operational mission thread performance.

What you'll do
  • Apply systems thinking frameworks to decompose complex naval power requirements, trace mission-level warfighting needs to physical system constraints, and identify second-order effects across shipboard power, propulsion, and combat system interfaces
  • Develop and maintain system architectures for naval power systems using MBSE methodologies, ensuring full requirements traceability from operational concept through implementation and sustainment
  • Build and manage SysML models (i.e., requirements, functional, behavioral, and parametric diagrams) that capture mission threads, interface control definitions, operational modes, and power system design margins
  • Define integration requirements, data exchange standards, and interoperability requirements across digital twin representations of shipboard power systems, supporting model-to-hardware correlation and design-space exploration
  • Design test and evaluation strategies that validate model predictions against measured system performance, including T&E planning, evaluation criteria definition, data collection architecture, and results analysis
  • Develop and maintain SE tooling, workflows, and automation that advance the digital engineering strategy, including digital thread continuity, model-based trade study execution, and decision support dashboards for design and program reviews
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including electrical engineers, digital twin engineers, and software engineers
  • Serve as a technical authority for MBSE and related methodologies
  • Identify and implement innovative technologies, tools, and methodologies

Required Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a DoW Secret Clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering related discipline
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in systems engineering applications for system design or operations
  • 3+ years of demonstrated experience in model-based systems engineering applications for system design or operations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce clear technical reports and give concise briefings to senior military and executive stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters or PhD in systems engineering or a related technical discipline
  • 5+ years of professional experience in systems engineering for naval machinery or power systems
  • Experience building system of systems models utilizing Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) or Mission Engineering frameworks
  • Practical knowledge of integrated power systems, power conversion, energy storage, and electrical distribution technologies
  • Certifications relevant to systems engineering such as CSEP (Certified Systems Engineering Professional) or ESEP (Expert Systems Engineering Professional)
  • Certifications relevant to model based systems engineering such as OMG OCSMP (OMG Certified Systems Modeling Professional), DAU Digital Engineering, or DAU SPRDE (Systems Planning, Research, Development, & Engineering)
