Decision Engineer information

What is a decision engineer?

Decision Engineers are professionals who apply analytical, mathematical, and computational techniques to help organizations make data-driven decisions. They often use tools from operations research, data science, and systems engineering to evaluate complex options, optimize processes, and predict outcomes. Their work enables businesses to solve challenging problems, improve efficiency, and minimize risks in decision-making processes.

How does a decision engineer typically collaborate with data scientists and business stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions?

Decision Engineers frequently act as a bridge between technical teams and business stakeholders. In a typical workflow, they collaborate with data scientists to understand the underlying data models and analytical outputs, then work closely with business leaders to translate these insights into actionable strategies. This often involves facilitating discussions to clarify business objectives, ensuring analytical approaches align with end goals, and iteratively refining solutions based on feedback. Strong communication and project management skills are essential, as Decision Engineers must synthesize complex information and drive consensus among diverse teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a decision engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Decision Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, expertise in data modeling, and a background in fields like operations research, mathematics, or computer science. Familiarity with decision analysis tools, optimization software (such as CPLEX or Gurobi), and programming languages like Python or R is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to synthesize complex information are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies enable Decision Engineers to develop effective solutions for complex business challenges and drive data-informed decision-making.

What is the difference between Decision Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectDecision EngineerData Scientist

Work environmentFocus on designing decision models, algorithms, and optimization processesFocus on analyzing data, building predictive models, and extracting insights
Employer and industry usageUsed in industries like manufacturing, finance, and logistics for decision automationCommon in tech, finance, healthcare for data analysis and modeling

Decision Engineers primarily develop decision models and optimize processes to improve business outcomes, while Data Scientists analyze data to generate insights and predictive models. Both roles require strong analytical skills, but Decision Engineers focus more on decision automation and operational efficiency, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

Job description

Overview & Responsibilities

In business for more than 70 years, Republic Finance is proud to be a trusted lender in over 300 communities across the United States! We specialize in providing flexible lending solutions and outstanding customer service. Driven by our shared mission to pursue excellence for our team, our customers, and our performance, we are continuously improving our customer offerings in tandem with opening more branches in new states each year. We also regularly promote from within and enjoy giving back to the communities we serve. In a nutshell, our company culture is about helping customers, investing in our employee's future, and ensuring that our performance makes an impact on our community!

Republic Finance is seeking a technically strong, detail-oriented professional to join the Fraud and Decision Platforms team. In this role you will be the hands‑on builder behind our credit, underwriting and fraud decisioning — translating business policy into configured, tested and governed logic inside our decision platforms, and connecting those platforms to the data vendors, bureaus and internal systems that feed them. This role reports to the Manager of Fraud and Decision Platforms and will be based out of our Plano, TX HQ on a hybrid schedule. Key responsibilities are as follows:

  • Implement credit, underwriting and fraud policies within the decision platforms, translating business requirements into decision flows, rulesets, scorecards, matrices and cutoff logic.
  • Deploy machine learning models produced by the Data Science team into the decision platforms — via PMML, native scorecard logic, or API calls to externally hosted model endpoints — and validate that in‑platform scoring reproduces the model owner's expected results.
  • Coordinate with data vendors, credit bureaus and solution partners to build and maintain connectors that enable API‑driven decisioning, including request and response mapping, attribute parsing, authentication, and timeout and fallback handling.
  • Partner with business teams to ensure requirements are clear, complete and testable before development begins; document decision logic, assumptions and edge cases so that changes are reviewable and auditable.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of Republic Finance's business systems — loan origination, servicing and data platforms — and how the decision engine interacts with them end to end.
  • Build and maintain robust governance processes, including version control, change management, peer review, release documentation and rollback procedures, so the decision platforms run reliably and every production change is traceable.
  • Perform thorough testing before any production release, including unit, regression, integration and user acceptance testing, using Postman and other automated testing or simulation software; build reusable test case libraries and batch simulations to confirm expected decision outcomes.
  • Monitor changes post‑implementation — tracking decision volumes, approval rates, error rates and response times — and confirm the agreed business success criteria are met before closing out a change.
  • Troubleshoot production decisioning issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement preventive controls and monitoring to reduce recurrence.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a quantitative or technical subject area is required, an advanced degree is attractive. Extensive experience and skills in Decision Platforms can waive the requirement for a degree.
  • 1–3 years of professional experience programming, working with databases, and configuring or supporting Decision Platforms such as those from GDS Link Modellica, Provenir, FICO, Experian PowerCurve or comparable rules and decisioning engines. Consumer lending or financial services experience strongly preferred.
  • Intermediate to Advance knowledge of SQL, Snowflake and relational databases.
  • Intermediate to Advance knowledge of programming using Python.
  • Intermediate to Advance knowledge of Excel and BI skills; Power BI preferred.
  • Working familiarity with REST APIs and JSON or XML payloads, and experience using Postman or similar tools for API testing.
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, with strong attention to detail and a strict, test‑first approach to production changes.
  • Excellent communication and should be a standout colleague willing to collaborate and help other team members.
  • A high level of initiative, intellectual curiosity and creativity, and strong time management skills with the ability to lead multiple concurrent releases.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience deploying machine learning models into a production decisioning environment.
  • Familiarity with credit bureau data and attributes (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) and with third‑party fraud or identity verification vendors.
  • Exposure to model risk management, fair lending, or ECOA/Regulation B adverse action requirements as they apply to automated decisioning.
  • Experience with version control (Git) and structured release management or CI/CD practices.
Benefits

Weoffer a competitive compensation and benefits packageincluding:

  • Health, Dental, & Vision Insurance
  • 15 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) to start + 1 additional personal holiday
  • 401k + employer match
  • Company provided Life Insurance & Long Term Disability
  • Employee Assistance Program - Confidential mental health support
Additional benefits with Republic Finance include:
  • Access to LinkedIn Learning's library of 10,000+ professional development courses
  • Employee of the Month Program
  • Philanthropic support for multiple charities including an annual drive for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
  • Regular drawings for Sports tickets
  • Professional offices with a friendly team environment
