Want to make a real difference in the world-and enjoy doing it? At Abode Energy Management (Abode), we care deeply about the work we do and the impact it has on our planet's future. We're a fast-growing energy efficiency program implementer in the Northeast, leading the way in electrification and heat pump adoption. Our team is fun, kind, passionate, and progressive-and we offer a competitive benefits package to match. That includes Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, and Disability Insurance, a matching 401(k), and fully paid Parental Leave. We also believe you should be able to balance your work and personal life, so we offer generous paid time off (more than 30 days a year!) and reasonable flexibility in when and where you work. If you're looking for meaningful work, caring coworkers, and a great company culture, come join us.
Summary/Objective
Building from its core expertise of administering residential energy efficiency programs, Abode implements many utility and government-sponsored programs helping homeowners and small businesses develop and implement plans to electrify and decarbonize their buildings, while supporting contractors to provide quality decarbonization services. The Massachusetts (MA) Decarbonization Advisor (Advisor) will provide a variety of support services virtually and in-person, including decarbonization consultations, presentations, and trainings. This is a terrific opportunity for someone with a strong background in building science and energy efficiency, as well as the ability to translate technical jargon into actionable, practical guidance that helps realize the climate benefits of electrification.
Responsibilities
Reporting to a Program Manager and working closely with experienced members of Abode's decarbonization team, this position will include some or all of the following responsibilities:
Provide virtual consultations to residential customers considering decarbonization solutions, with a heavy focus on heat pumps.
  • The Decarbonization Advisor (Advisor) will help homeowners understand the capabilities and limitations of heat pump technology based on their home's attributes and their goals for the systems. Consultations may range from helping people to understand the basic pros and cons of systems to helping them better understand sizing, design, and installation considerations to maximize their benefits. The Advisor will utilize Abode's proprietary quote review tool to consult virtually with residential customers to compare and evaluate equipment options for adopting heat pumps. This position focuses primarily on Residential customers and may support future Commercial initiatives as necessary.
Engage with heat pump contractors, distributors, manufacturers, and customers.
  • The Advisor may meet (typically not more than once or twice a week) either virtually or in the field with companies involved in manufacturing, distributing, and installing heat pumps, both to provide them with information about related programs and incentives, as well as to learn more about industry needs.
Contractor and Customer Support.
  • The Advisor will partner with the rest of the team to provide ongoing support to both contractors and customers, with tasks including managing a shared inbox/phone line for contractor inquiries, responding to and helping to resolve customer and contractor issues, and conducting regular reviews of contractor certifications and following up as needed to obtain renewed documents.

Collaborate on the development of program tools and deliver discrete projects.
  • The Advisor will work collaboratively with internal and external partners to develop new program tools, as well as deliver on the creation and/or improvement of resources to meet evolving program needs and technology updates.

Learn about and stay current with recommended system design and installation standards.
  • The Decarbonization Advisor will stay current with evolving standards for the recommended design and installation of heat pumps, providing fact-based, useful advice to homeowners and contractors.

Other tasks as assigned by your Manager, including administrative duties (i.e. answering phone calls, staffing program inboxes, and conducting data review).
  • Abode is evolving multi-faceted programs for state agencies and utilities utilizing a comprehensive blend of education, technical assistance, and financial incentives to accelerate the adoption of electrification and decarbonization solutions. The Advisor role will evolve over time to encompass new or changing responsibilities as these programs mature, including the possibility to work across multiple programs.

Qualifications
Strong candidates for this position will bring most, if not all, of the following skills and experience:
  • Strong technical expertise in residential and small-medium commercial building science and energy efficiency, as evidenced by:
    • A degree in building science, mechanical engineering, sustainability or other related fields, and/or

  • Previous experience in and knowledge of building science obtained through work in utility energy efficiency programs, HVAC design or installation, construction, or other related businesses.

  • Previous experience in an advisory, educational, or customer service role providing advice or assistance to customers.
  • Familiarity with navigating government or utility incentive programs.
  • Previous experience working as a contractor or engaging with such contractors.
  • Ability to travel to locations in MA as needed.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills; both 1:1 and in making presentations to groups.
    • Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese as well as English is a plus.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in quickly learning and working with software such as Microsoft Office, Salesforce, and energy modeling tools.
  • Calm, even temperament suited to meeting people with different needs and backgrounds where they are.
