Decarbonization Engineer information
What does a decarbonization engineer do?
How does a decarbonization engineer typically collaborate with other departments to implement sustainability initiatives?
What is the difference between Decarbonization Engineer vs Sustainability Engineer?
| Aspect | Decarbonization Engineer | Sustainability Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's in engineering, environmental science, or related field; certifications in energy management or environmental standards | Bachelor's in environmental engineering, sustainability, or related; certifications in LEED, sustainability management |
| Work Environment | Industrial sites, energy plants, consulting firms focused on reducing carbon emissions | Corporate offices, consulting firms, NGOs working on broader sustainability initiatives |
| Industry Usage | Primarily in energy, manufacturing, and industrial sectors | Across various sectors including corporate, government, and non-profit organizations |
While both roles focus on environmental impact, Decarbonization Engineers specifically target reducing carbon emissions through technical solutions, whereas Sustainability Engineers adopt a broader approach to overall environmental and social sustainability strategies.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a decarbonization engineer?

Energy and Utilities Portfolio Oversight
- Oversee campus energy and utility systems to meet targets for reliability, efficiency, and cost.
- Direct EMIS, AMI, and FDD analytics to identify performance gaps and corrective actions.
- Verify savings using IPMVP (International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol) methods.
- Monitor and report KPIs including energy use intensity, utility cost per GSF, Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and reliability indices.
Decarbonization Program Delivery
- Coordinate development of the campus decarbonization roadmap with the Sustainability team, including interim milestones toward 2040 targets.
- Prioritize and sequence a project pipeline to maximize emissions reductions and co-benefits.
- Coordinate utility incentives, grants, and external programs with Procurement and Finance.

About Johns Hopkins University
Sourced by ZipRecruiter
Gilman believed that teaching and research go hand in hand—that success in one depends on success in the other—and that a modern university must do both well. He also believed that sharing our knowledge and discoveries would help make the world a better place. In 145 years, we haven’t strayed from that vision. This is still a destination for excellent, ambitious scholars and a world leader in teaching and research. Distinguished professors mentor students in the arts and music, humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering, international studies, education, business, and the health professions. Those same faculty members, along with their colleagues at the university’s Applied Physics Laboratory, have made us the nation’s leader in federal research and development funding every year since 1979. That’s a fitting distinction for America’s first research university, a place that has revolutionized higher education in the U.S. and continues to bring knowledge and discoveries to the world.
