What is a DEA data scientist?

DEA Data Scientists are professionals who work for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and use data analysis, statistics, and machine learning techniques to support investigations and operations related to drug enforcement. They analyze large datasets to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies that can help uncover illegal drug activities and assist in decision-making. Their work involves collaborating with law enforcement agents, developing predictive models, and providing actionable intelligence to improve public safety. DEA Data Scientists often have backgrounds in computer science, statistics, or related fields, and are skilled in programming languages like Python or R. Their contributions are vital in modernizing law enforcement efforts and making data-driven decisions.

How does a DEA data scientist typically collaborate with law enforcement agents and analysts on complex investigations?

DEA Data Scientists work closely with agents and analysts to interpret large and often sensitive datasets, helping to uncover patterns related to drug trafficking and criminal networks. They regularly participate in cross-disciplinary meetings, translating technical findings into actionable intelligence for field operations or case development. Collaboration is key, as data scientists must ensure their models and analyses align with investigative needs and legal standards. Strong communication and adaptability are essential to bridge the gap between data-driven insights and law enforcement objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DEA data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DEA Data Scientist, you need a strong background in statistics, data analysis, and machine learning, typically supported by a degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with analytical tools such as Python, R, SQL, and specialized law enforcement databases, as well as relevant security clearances, is often required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in interpreting complex data and presenting actionable insights to stakeholders. These skills are crucial for supporting investigations, enhancing operational efficiency, and ensuring data-driven decision-making within the agency.

Job description

***Position is 100% on-site***

***Secret Clearance Is Required***

VSolvit is looking for a broadly talented Data Scientist with quantitative research skills to take an active role on our data analytics team. You will work on vast amounts of DEA data to discover hidden information by applying modern statistical and ML/AI techniques. The main scripting languages used on this program are Python and some 'R'. The databases are MS SQL Server and Elastic Search and are used against the enterprise data warehouses with Kibana, Tableau or other BI and Visualization tools. This is a mature team that is high profile and charged with delivering solutions in Data Sciences enabling maximum leverage of DEA master data. At a higher Level, this position is part of a team of developers and IT SME’s who support the DEA data warehouse project and the ability to recognize opportunities for the correlation of data is vital for this position. The need for strategic thinking, with the ability to easily spot gaps, ensure accuracy, and find differences in what should be the same values in data, and lags in data that will ultimately affect velocity and overall quality of the products, is highly desired.

Your primary focus will be applying data mining techniques, doing statistical analysis, and building high-quality prediction systems integrated with DEA programs and DEA data (e.g. structured, unstructured, and mixed datasets). You will also design and develop automatic scoring using machine learning techniques, build recommendation systems, design, and develop classifiers for feature extraction. This program is one in which pushing boundaries and innovation within the scope of the program is valued. There is a fully supported effort to develop and further Power BI/ML/AI in the quest for 'making the data dance'. The Data Sciences group provides innovative algorithm development using various techniques to achieve desired insight or open eyes to new revealing results and possibilities. In addition to technical knowledge the team values the ability to collaborate and communicate with one another to ensure a highly productive, respectful, and harmonious work setting, be it virtual or mixed of onsite and remote.

As with any position, additional expectations exist.
