Job description

Postdoctoral Fellow positions are available in the Michailidis Lab at Emory University. The lab focuses on Virus–Host interactions using innovative tools including state-of-the-art targeted and whole-genome CRISPR screens, bulk and single-cell transcriptomics, and a set of molecular, virological, and biochemical assays across different viruses (HBV, HIV). The lab also has a special interest in liver-related studies including viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and immunometabolism, employing advanced primary human hepatocyte culture systems and humanized liver chimeric mice.

The Michailidis Lab is part of the “Laboratory of Biochemical Pharmacology” Division in the Department of Pediatrics and is surrounded by a diverse group of collaborating scientists. The lab is housed in the modern, open-space Health Sciences and Research Building II. Emory University is one of the top US academic institutions, with highly impactful research programs and access to core facilities equipped with cutting-edge technologies. Emory is in the suburbs of Atlanta, a vibrant metropolitan city that combines city-life attractions within a forest landscape.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career.
  • The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc.
  • Designs and evaluates experiments.
  • Develops new ideas that promote current research.
  • Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • May be responsible for operation of specific equipment.
  • May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff.
  • Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee.
  • The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available.
  • Appointments cannot exceed five years. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates must be highly motivated, well-organized, technically proficient, critically minded, and able to work independently but collaboratively with others.
  • Candidates must hold a PhD and have a strong background in virology.
  • Strong virology skills are highly appreciated. We are especially interested in candidates with hands-on virology experience spanning both cell culture and animal (mouse) studies.
  • Prior experience in HIV virology and/or HBV virology is highly desirable and will be considered a strong advantage.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field.
  • Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
  • Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

PREFERRED TECHNICAL SKILLS: (not all necessary)

  • Virology in cell culture and in vivo, particularly HIV and/or HBV (highly appreciated)
  • Molecular cloning (mutagenesis, lentiviral vectors)
  • Cell culture (cell lines, primary cells)
  • Mouse experience (handling mice, tissue harvest)
  • Molecular biology methods (Western blot, microscopy, flow cytometry, ELISA)
  • Bioinformatics analysis (RNA-Seq analysis)
  • Assay development (biochemical, cell-based, medium- and high-throughput)
