Job description
Cleveland Clinic, a distinguished academic healthcare system, announces its search for the Chief of the Digestive Disease Institute (DDI), a flagship Institute with Departments and Divisions in Ohio, Florida, London and Abu Dhabi.
DDI encompasses the Departments of Colorectal Surgery, Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition, and General Surgery. The mission of the Institute is to be the international leader in medical and surgical treatment of digestive diseases by providing the highest quality clinical care, promoting digestive health, and exceling in patient experience, innovation, research and education.
DDI is comprised of 215 staff physicians, 132 advanced practice providers, 335 inpatient and outpatient nurses, 230 registered dieticians, and 194 additional non-clinical caregivers. The Institute includes teams in Cleveland Clinic Florida, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and Cleveland Clinic London. In Ohio, the Institute provides services at 30 locations and in Florida, the Institute provides care at 7 locations. In 2025, DDI's volume consisted of approximately 225,466 evaluation and management visits, 128,999 endoscopic procedures, 75,778 new & consult E&Ms, 29,141 surgical cases, and 18,720 total discharges.
DDI has a significant educational and research impact on the health system. There are 149 residents and fellows under the Institute. DDI has 20 training programs of which 11 are surgery programs and 9 are gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition programs. DDI currently has $15.2 million in research funding. In 2025, the Institute had 399 IRB-approved research studies and 503 publications.
The Institute Chief will be a General Surgeon, Colorectal Surgeon or Gastroenterologist physician leader with impressive credentials who reports to the Cleveland Clinic Enterprise Chief of Staff. The Institute Chief must be able to implement and drive the strategic mission of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. The ideal candidate must have a record of excellence in clinical care, education and scholarship as well as significant experience in leadership, administration and program development. The Institute Chief will be a demonstrated leader with strength in communication and ability to collaborate both within and outside of the Institute. Duties and responsibilities of the new Institute Chief will be to provide leadership for the Institute across global sites, and will include oversight of general operations, quality and safety, research, innovation, education, recruitment, retention and mentoring of medical staff, administrators, educators and researchers.
