Job description

Job Purpose:

Observes and monitors all in-coming and out-going traffic and activities on Virco properties and takes necessary action to provide physical security for the company.

Essential Functions:
•Greets and checks all in-bound vehicles and persons, and monitors out-going traffic.
•Follows Safety, Quality, and Housekeeping policies.
•Records and directs all salespersons/visitors to appropriate Virco personnel.
•Checks all employees for proper ID badges.
•Answers and transfers telephone calls.
•Monitors main plant radio frequency and responds when called using approved radio procedures.
•In absence of a specific contact, confers with plant superintendent on all visitors or unexpected persons wanting to gain entry to plant grounds.
•Monitors electronic alarm systems where applicable.
•Understands and enforces the Virco policy concerning serving civil process papers by persons other than law enforcement officers.
•Ensures that no Virco employee’s vehicle or vehicle content is removed without the consent of the vehicle’s owner/operator.
•Ensures that no Virco property is removed from Virco grounds without the written approval by a Virco supervisor.
•Submits written incident reports to supervisor.
•Wears the authorized uniform in accordance with established procedures.
•Protects all persons from threats of injury within his/her limited abilities.
•Requests advice and assistance from the supervisor in those matters that require a decision beyond the scope of his/her authority.
•Reports any and all fire and safety hazards and takes reasonable action to control the dangerous condition until relief arrives.
•Checks and logs all incoming and outgoing large trucks by name of company and driver as well as time of day, trailer number, and product.
•Assists truck drivers with locating trucks/trailers and bills of lading.
•Handles all paperwork and procedures associated with the weekend issuance of empty/loaded trailers.
•Controls and operates gates for routine and emergency operations.
•Assists in response to disasters or medical emergencies.
•Patrols all Virco property on foot.
•Opens and maintains presence at gates.
•Directs traffic during times of congestion as well as evacuates persons from dangerous areas.
•Observes activity occurring in areas of responsibility and is alert to acts of a suspicious nature.
•Observes, stops, and questions suspicious persons to determine the nature of their business and to provide direction.
•Erects temporary barricades and ropes off areas upon instruction.
•Obtains and delivers supplies and equipment to and from the guard shacks.
•Maintains all equipment in clean and operational condition.
•Performs overtime as assigned.
•Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:
•A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred as well as 6 months of related experience.
•Must have good written and oral communication skills in English and good analytical abilities.
•Bi-lingual Spanish is a plus.
•Must have a valid driver’s license.
•Must have good teamwork skills.
•Must be flexible.
•Must be able to meet and maintain performance standards.
California BSIS Guard Card required


*Hours: Friday 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Saturday 6 p.m. to 6 a.m..

*Also required to work holidays and fill in as needed during the week.
