Job description

Inpatient Charge Nurse (RN) - Acute General Medicine (3 Central)
Step into a leadership role where your clinical expertise and ability to guide teams directly shape patient outcomes in a high-acuity, fast-moving environment. This is an opportunity to lead from the front while remaining closely connected to patient care.
At UVA Health, nursing leadership is not about stepping away from the bedside-it is about elevating it. As an Inpatient Charge Nurse on 3 Central, you will play a pivotal role in coordinating care for medically complex patients while supporting and mentoring a highly collaborative nursing team. This is where clinical judgment, team leadership, and patient advocacy come together to make a measurable difference every single shift.
The Role:
In this Day Shift Charge Nurse position, you will serve as both a clinical leader and a steady resource for your peers on a dynamic Acute General Medicine unit. This unit cares for adult patients with a wide range of acute medical needs, including endocrine disorders, infectious diseases, renal conditions, and select cardiology cases.
You will serve as a dedicated Charge Nurse without a patient assignment, focused on leading the team and supporting unit-wide clinical operations
In practice, your day may include:
  • Leading daily operations for a fast-paced medical unit while ensuring safe, efficient patient flow
  • Supporting bedside RNs with clinical decision-making, prioritization, and escalation of care
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate treatment plans for complex patient populations
  • Managing admissions, discharges, and transfers with a focus on continuity and safety
  • Serving as a mentor and resource for nurses across varying levels of experience
  • Maintaining situational awareness across the unit to proactively address patient and staffing needs
This role offers a balance of leadership responsibility and direct clinical engagement, allowing you to influence both individual patient outcomes and broader team performance.
Why UVA Health:
UVA Health is a nationally recognized academic medical center where nursing leadership is deeply valued and supported. As a Charge Nurse, you are an extension of that commitment-helping to drive excellence at the unit level while advancing the mission of a leading health system.
What makes this opportunity stand out:
  • Academic Medical Center Excellence: Practice in a setting that integrates cutting-edge research, education, and clinical innovation
  • Magnet-Recognized Nursing Culture: Work within a system that prioritizes nursing autonomy, shared governance, and professional growth
  • Built-In Support Model: The presence of a dedicated Charge Nurse each shift ensures stronger operational support and better workload balance
  • Specialized Medical Exposure: Care for diverse and complex patient populations across endocrine, infectious disease, renal, and cardiology disciplines
  • Leadership Impact: Play a key role in shaping team culture, mentoring staff, and driving high standards of patient care
  • Relocation assistance may be available for qualified candidates.

This is more than a Charge Nurse role-it's a chance to lead within a system that actively invests in your development and values your expertise.
Why People Love Living in Charlottesville:
Charlottesville offers the ideal balance for healthcare professionals seeking both career fulfillment and lifestyle quality. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the area provides easy access to outdoor recreation, from hiking and biking trails to scenic wineries and national parks. The city itself is known for its vibrant food scene, rich history, and strong sense of community. With a lower cost of living than many metropolitan areas and a pace that supports work-life balance, Charlottesville makes it easier to recharge, connect, and thrive both personally and professionally.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor's of Science in Nursing or currently enrolled in an accredited nursing BSN/MSN program that will be completed within 5 years of hire.
Experience: RN Clinician 2 or higher who has been employed on the unit for 6 months or has had previous Charge Nurse experience from another unit/organization.
Licensure: Licensed to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
